Why tappet settings are necessary?

i have given up trying different cng experts in karachi they all seems to rip u off and have different opinions about getting better average on cng some say your cluth plates are weak some reckon u need to adjust your tappet settings some says oh cng pressure counts i used to get 130 to 140 on 55 l cylinder with out ac in city and it gone down to 110 to 120 and no one seems to get the verdict why so my question is what is tappet adjustment and why its necessary to get a good cng average ?

well... which car u hav n how much is it driven? for cnged cars, ppl say u hav to get tappet settings after 20k kms... nd yes they CAN effect milage on cng or petrol,and also performance.

Its the gap between tip of the push rod and tip of the rocker arm. Little technical. In simple language this clearance determines at what time a specific valve is opened or closed and for how much time. It greatly effects the effeiciency of the vehicle. Google it you wil become wise.

Yes very right,
1 - Your CNG pressure is low, might be problem in Karachi as we have 180~200 here in Wah/Taxila.
2 - Use Clutch at upper Level but this is not related to Consumption, but gears as in hurry we don't press full clutch, so it should release above half the paddle.
3 - Tappets are most important, and To me you should get it done every month. Go for tuning (here Rs. 150~200) includes Tappet settings and Plug + Points cleaning and CNG adjustment etc. It's not lengthy, It's intermediary to Cam + Rocker and Valve + Piston. The whole combustion intake (CNG+Air) and Cylinder Pull Back pressure release.
4 - Get your CNG Cylinder clean, they would invert it for 1 hr max and oil inside cylinder would quit.
5 - One Major factor is Your Air Filter Cleaning and Fixing of your Air Filter container completely, My mechanic used a small pipe (cut with blade in line) and fixed over border of Air Filter box put multiple washers to tighten cover and what ever to make sure no air goes in box except the intake. This improves air filtration and QTY.
6 - Use good engine oil, use a Sludge cleaner liquid once and in winter use oil with 10W-30 or 40 and in Summer 10W-50, 10W-40 or 20W-50.

thanks all can any one guide me a good mechanic in karachi preferbly near ayesha manzil so i can get my tappet adjustment strange part is i dont have any of these faults yes i have a longer self starting the car and its not giving very good milleage like 120 its giving in city on 55l cylinder but pick and things seems okie but no harm testing it and yea does it effects starting aswell ? observe my car need 1 or 2 self to start before that it used to start with out self ? thanks for replying guys !

As far as i remember.Cultus don't need tappet adjustment.I had a cultus for 7 years out of which 3 years on CNG and mechanic never said that it needs tappet adjustment.

Hi,

For brand new engines definitely you will not have problem, it comes when your parts become older, there is also a spring behind tappet tips and you can understand after long time springs and other parts would not function same way.

I had problem with starting earlier, Auto Elec changed the Self Starter bushes, after that self performance improved, I also got Relay (cutout) installed with Self Starter to improve current supply. 2nd, Difference came when I recently used Sludge Cleaner to remove sludge/wax from engine and changed the grade of oil i.e. from 20W-50 to 10W-30. Nowadays I start on 1st self in morning on CNG. You know oils below or equal to 10W are good for cold cranking engine and less wear of engine as oil with low viscosity quickly pumps to parts. but upper grade should be >=30 mentioned above.

Check the injector nozzle of CNG, if it's not in good condition change (means mechanic would check ) At a pressure of 120 there would be oil in Cylinder I think.

I drive 115 KM daily and getting 23~25 KM/Kg, mainly 4th gear . Try full paddle to come out of 1st and 2nd gears quickly. it's 1990 Swift/Khyber.

very well done fasfas thanks u let me understand it better i will get my self service soon but i still think its mainly cng setting now its a theory of mechanics they said if u want performance they will open the gas widely so u wont get good average on cng but if u want good average u wont get good pick up i will rather go in the middle and atleast a half self start aswell thanks again .

If there is a missing problem on EFI cars on low gears what could be the reason??
is the valve change solve this problem??

Hi,
don't know EFI,
When they open Engine Head for Tappet fix, they move the front tyre (I think in 4th gear without start with hand) One helper moves tyre forward or backward slowly while Master sees the movement of Cam, Rocker, Tappet & Valve arms. They can guess if there is some thing not going up-down rightly. If tappets are hard or some Arm etc. etc.

Your cultus engine has hydaulic valve buckets (tappets) and do not need adjustment ever, when the valve seat wears out the bucket self adjusts to a new height.

in a regular adjustable system the action of heat/shrink and constant pulling of the valve spring forces the seat to wear and the stem to elongate - hence you need to loosen the clearances to have a positive seal at the valve faces on the valve seats.

Plus try Injector Cleaner either Spray or Liquid additive for Petrol. I saw this in ISB F-10 Caltex pump.
There were two types of liquids, one for injectors and carburetor, other for Fuel System (whole)

Change/Clean Air Filter, that is like breath to your engine, may be when you go upper gears at high paddle, Engine couldn't suck CNG or Air properly, at high acceleration paddle more input is required.

As Rain is not coming down there is heavy dust all around these days.

first of all thanks a lot fasfas for your detail information about my question indeed its a big help i went to mechanic today and he said what xulfiqar just stated that cultus doesnt need tappet setting and he has done his setting and ask me to try it now well the thing what he explained me which is not bad when i think about it that if u want good performance and u want to use your cng like u use car on petrol it wont be giving u best average so u can only get one thing either good performance or good average it has to do with cng setting that how widely he will open the gas now i would like to ask fasfas and xulfiqar and all experts here why cant we get both performance and good average there should be a line btw both points so we can enjoy our ride on cng and get very good average aswell please enlightened me in this regards thanks
