Wrong FIR on non-stolen bike

Hi, I purchased a second hand bike and got it transferred to my name. Today I was stopped at a police check point and they told me that it was stolen. They also showed me the status of bike in their system as stolen.

The bike is in my name, I have all the documents and after checking in the system, I found out that the FIR is only registered on the bike's number plate. However, the chassis and engine number mentioned in the FIR do not match with the bike and its copy.

Please advise how can I challenge the FIR on the bike and remove the stolen status as the bike registration number is same as of FIR but the engine and chassis number are different, maybe due to wrong data entry.

That sounds like a really frustrating situation. A wrong FIR can cause unnecessary stress and waste time, primarily when it’s due to a clerical error.

logically it makes sense to reach the party who registered the FIR
they need to clear this mistake out

it will be a time consuming but you shall approach the police station where the FIR is lodged. Find out date, name & number of applicant, examine the document provided by him to lodge FIR.

if it is before the transfer to your name, inform the police of seller who sold you the bike. also you shall approach the seller, demand full refund for fraudulent sale, inform him you will register FIR for selling a stolen bike and monetary fraud committed.

incase the FIR is after the date of transfer, the issue remains valid. The registration number is allocated to a specific bike under a engine & chassis number with excise records. The case is likely case of Typo Graphical error at the police station registering the FIR.

In any case only a visit to concerned police station will help you.
