NEVER EVER EVER USE A MAGNET to lift the shim or lifter, the lifters will be magnetized and will attract fine particles to themselves and you can imagine what happens next. - FLAT CAM.. The correct way to extract lifters is to use a valve grinding cup - the correct way to remove shims is to use miniature needle nose pliers. - the lifter has a cut to enable such removal if you are using the lifter depress tool.
If you dont have the depress tool - take off the camshafts , if you have the need to replace valve seals, use the rope feed method and squeeze it to TDC and use a hand made jig tool to depress the valves and remove the keepers (instead of magnets - use a sticky grease for the collets)
replace valve seals and use a drinking straw to insert them over the valves.
