dip the flaps in mollases solution (raab from sugarcane processing) for about 4 days (or till the rust falls off) - remove and powerwash them, then coat them with spray paint.
for the little serrated washers on the pop-out windows - do NOT reuse them, buy new ones - they cost about Rs 1/piece max - I use them on grounding points too - they actually bite into the metal and lock themselves.
