Isn't it the original fitting spot in the body mold design for Floor Mounted Dimmer Switch in case the bug was a LHD?

yes it is..thinking of converting it to a LHD are we????

The circular tab / indentation on top marks the spot the steering column would have gone thru had it been a LHD.

I think it would be a good idea to give it a light coat of paint after all the cleanup...use a spray can and mask the surrounds with newspapers. Left untreated after sanding the rust would re-appear within no time.

you need a power tool with attachments, a mask and some eye protection. I realize this is labour of love but save your energies (and time) for areas that are established 'keepers' like the body shell. For all you know the drum may be too worn and need to be replaced so all your hard work would only make it look good lying on the scrap heap for the short time before its shovelled into a furnace. It does give one a great deal of personal satisfaction to achieve these results but it also sad to throw away a part you have attended to so lovingly. (and I do not suggest you save the old brake drums as mementos)

Nasir made a great point about the drums, i had to ditch a set when i swapped back to the OEM bolt pattern on my car as well because the ones on the car were too worn down (liek the rest of the mechanical parts on my 1303.

the same applied to the fronts but i was waiting to fit my disc brake kit so i have (for now) retained the drums up front,.. but they need to be replaced soon as well with the discs if i intend on stopping.

@reezvan,
your labour on the car will eb used as a guideline for my friend who is restoring his dads 69 beetle,.. this will help illustrate how far we all SHOULD go to take care of our beloved beetles to him.

hats off to you buddy, every time i read this thread i want to roll up my sleeves and get to work on my cars as well.

@ Reezwaan. Don't forget to pick up some nitrile gloves when you are in Islamabad. They are good to protect your hands and from the black grease getting under your nails...
