First and the most important thing would be to invest in a good quality fire-extinguisher. Romano is your best source as he has nagged everyone till they bought one for their cars. I am surprised how you escaped his attention. I have a small fire-extinguisher in all my cars but thankfully never had to use it.
Until such time please do not fill and keep more than half a tank of petrol. You don't plan to go on any long trips anytime soon so even half a tank would take you a few weeks to use up.

The gasket that you use for the sender unit is made of special material. You can try cutting one out of an old car tube (no kidding) but trim the inside edge close to the rim as any overhanging rubber would crumble and fall into the tank with a worse case scenario of finding its way into the fuel line.
It may also be the rubber boot on top of the sender unit (you'll be able to see it once you remove the metal cover) That boot also hardens and cracks over a period of time. I'm afraid there is no other option but to replace the sender unit if that is the case. Keep us posted.
