as i've said before, this beetle is one hell of a survivour! and the surpises under the surface are amazing.

if your arms are tired try fabricating or buying a orbital/rotating polisher which could really speed up the process. I've also used glasurit on my 1303 but i did it by hand as i didn't want to overheat the clearcoat (which can severely damage it).

i can't wait to see this car in person.

CAUTION:

Never leave the car propped up on the jack alone with a wheel off when you are working on the car. ALWAYS use jack stands. Wood blocks can be a cheap alternative.(best to invest in a set of jack stands.) If you do not have jack stands, just push the wheel under the car to give you a margin of safety if the jack fails.

yes it is a trace of rust that needs to be attended to. I was just delaying taking the running board off to deal with the rust as i plan to replace the running boards with original used units that I have found in upstate NY.
