3G, 4G auctioning halted over incomplete PTA board

ISLAMABAD- Senate sub-committee on Information Technology and communications has ordered that auction of 3-G,4-G spectrum should be halted until the completion of PTA’s (Pakistan telecommunications Authority) board of directors.
The standing committee meeting convened by senator Zahid Khan, and participated by senator Abdul Haseeb Khan on special invitation of Faisal Raza Abidi took stock review of legal standing of supervisory committee overseeing the 3-G,4-G auctioning PTA Authority’s procedures, and court verdict(s) regarding 3-G,4-G auction mechanism. The committee also ruled that no official departments or defaulter concerns should participate in the auction, while secretary law and justice informed the standing committee that Supreme Court had asked federal government to form a commission and appoint heads of autonomous bodies within transparent procedures. He also deliberated that federal tax ombudsman convened a commission formed by federal government, comprising of, over whose recommendations 2 members of finance and technical respectively were appointed. Senator Faisal Raza Abidi seconded Zahid Khan’s directives regarding completion of PTA’s board of directors, citing an earlier similar verdict by Islamabad High Court, while also stressing transparency in sale of 3G spectrum, which could yield $ 3 billion for Pakistan’s reserves.
