Just returned from a 5 day trip to Fairy Meadows and Hunza. We were a group of 12 people plus the driver and Guide and the trip was arranged by a tour operator. Our transport was a Hi Roof Hiace. Following are the day by day details of our tour;
Day 1 : Islamabad to Chillas
We left Islamabad at around 6 in the morning. Our first stop was at Abbottabad for breakfast. Then a quick stop at Besham for refuelling. The journey was comfortable till Pattan. After Pattan, the condition of KKH deteriorated and the road was full of pot holes. Our speed decreased significantly due to the road conditions and we reached Dassu in the evening. Here we stopped for some refreshments and moved on. Night fell after Dassu and we could hardly manage 30 km per hour afterwards. We reached Chillas at 10 PM, a 16 hour long drive. Our stay was at Hotel Shangrilla. It was a comfortable ,neat and clean hotel. Indus river flows right behind it and looks awesome in the morning.
Day 2 : Chillas to Fairy Meadows
After an early breakfast, we left for Raikot. Its one and a half hour drive from Chillas and road conditions are below average. At Raikot we freshened up for 15 Mins.The Jeep track from fairy Meadows starts from here. So, we hired the Jeeps and started our journey. It was one hour and twenty mins long and pretty scary. There are no boundaries or blockages on the edges and the drop is sharp and several thousand feet. At several U turns, the Jeep cannot turn completely, so they half turn and then reverse towards the edge
and then turn again. The drivers are very experienced though.
The Jeep Track ends at Jail, from where the 5 Km Hike to Fairy Meadows starts. It takes around 2.5 to 3 hours for experienced trekkers. Being the fine physical specimen that i am,
, I hired a khachar which took 3 hours. The track was dangerous at few places, which just enough space at places to put one foot. But the views were astounding. We reached Fairy Meadows in about three hours and it was just out of this world. Even though, it was not lush green as seen in pictures, it was still amazing. We stayed at Fairy Meadow Cottages and nanga parbat was in full view from our balconies. Due to clear weather, it was very visible and very majestic. At night, we had a bonfire. The weather was extremely cold at night.
Day 3 : Fairy Meadows to Hunza
Early on day 3, two of our group members went towards nanga parbat base camp. The track was covered in 10 to 20 feet of snow but at night the snow gets hard which makes it easy to trek on. But the sun had come up when they reached view point so they had to return. After their return, the group started the descent which was easier than the upwards climb
. From Raikot, the drive to Hunza is about three hours. The KKH after Raikot has been built by the Chinese and its quality is better than Motorway. Thus, our journey was very comfortable. We stopped at Rakaposhi view point for tea and reached Hunza in the evening. Hunza is an incredibly beautiful valley. Our stay was at Eagle's Nest Hotel which sits atop a hill and provides breathtaking views of the valley and the surrounding peaks.
Day 4 : Hunza to Chillas
Early in the morning, we went to he view point to see the Golden Peak at sunrise. Sadly, it was covered in clouds and not visible. But other peaks looked very beautiful too as sun fell upon them. After breakfast, we went to Baltit Fort. A guide provided us a detailed tour. We also had a local dish called Gellin, which is similar to pancakes.
We wanted to go to Attabad Lake as well, but could not as there was no petrol in Hunza since 2 days and we didnot have enough fuel to go there and come back. So after lunch, we left for Chillas and reached it in eve. We stopped in Deynur for a few minutes to buy Mantus which is another local dish similar to dumplings. Stay was again at Hotel Shangrilla.
Day 5 : Chillas to Islamabad
Early in the morning, we started the 16 hour journey back to Islamabad. Breakfast was at Dassu and in eve we had the famous Saleem Bhai kay Pakoray from Sarai Saleh Near Haripur. We reached Isb at 10 o clock while another 5 hour journey awaited the group members from lahore.
I will upload the pics soon. Most of them are from my Cell Phone Camera and i am not a very good photographer
