9th gen civic engine explodes

Connector rod on cyl no 1 was broken into 3 pieces.
Crank journal bearings were perfect.
Seems like piston pin snaps and seized inside the bore.
But no oil starvation was found if it was present then first journal and main bearings would shoot up but they were perfectly fine.

reason to ask specifically for springiness of the bearing shell is to identify if the engine had a knocking problem, the knocking takes out the bearing "tension" - (its being used as forensic here) - the pin boss in piston fracturing is not normal unless the engine was hammered with knocking or hydrolocked.

if you put the crank on a lathe - you will notice its bent if it had hydrolock issue.

Yes this has happened twice. Two customers came to me with same issue. One had this issue near lulusar naran. He had to tow it to our workshop and then engine assembly was replaced.

Or the pcv system was getting clogged putting stress on low end. In the case I had inspected the pcv valve was blocked by soot and sludge and was stuck close.

I am suspecting an hydrolock as no other severe knock or pinging was present.
May be previously some water entered the CC and it bended the rod a little which was quite untraceable because no misfire or compression loss detected.

There was no knocking, or noise on cold start. The only unusual thing i found was that the waterbody bolts had jammed, very difficult to replace, the waterbody was noisy but the cooling system did have coolant.
Other than that, hydrolocking by the previous owner did cross my mind, but wouldn't that cause an weakness first, any noise or something, and I had been using this for a month prior to this, motorway trips touching speeds over 170, no noise or issue. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I'm no expert, but could an issue/defect during manufacture of the internal engine parts be the cause?

As in, issue was always there and slowly got worse with time and age until it let go?

Piston pin takes a hell of a lot of force as the engine runs, factory defect wont last past a few thou kims.

If there would have been hydrolocking, wouldn't that have effected all the cylinders?

It's supposed to be the most reliable Honda

Honda is on par in terms of reliability with Toyota, and in my experience their engines are a lot tougher than Toyotas. Not sure what you're on about. Honda is also

Im following this thread because I'm curious why this engine exploded.

Can we please not make this a Toyota Vs honda debate. There's already too much of that all over the internet.

Dodge is better than ford, ford is better than Chevy, honda is better than Toyota....blah blah blah. sheesh

If this had been a result of water logging, would there be surface rust? Because none of that was seen anywhere

I think I am going to count it down to bad luck and let it go. Because for a detailed analysis, the entire thing would need to be completely and properly stripped, and ain't nobody got time for that
