Assalam u alaikum
I've started investing in my father's Suzuki Swift 1989. I am a bit late in writing the story. Attached is the stage how it was a few months back.
And here is picture how it is now
I've swapped Wagon R (K10A Turbo) engine.
So here is the story. I took start right after last year Ramadan. I was on job so I asked my cousin to help me out. I gave him keys and he took the car to a denter on Kohat road near Badaber in Peshawar. The car engine was in running condition but the body was full of rust.
I used to visit car after 2 or 3 weeks. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of it in the workshop. I used to buy stuff (I bought a new hood, 2 fenders, back bumper, 2 headlights with parking lights, full single-piece rexine floor mat and air press) and deliver to shop. I never sat down there at the workshop to check progress.
Paintwork was done at Kohat Road near Civil Quarters, Peshawar. I don't remember how much dent and paintwork cost separately. In total it cost me around 65,000 PKR. I was out of budget at that time hence I didn't go for the engine swap. I made a mistake when I was bringing car back to home, I didn't check what is missing in the car. The denter took 3rd brake lamp, alarm system hooter, horn, and some other small things. Well... forget it.
After a few months dashboard started showing engine oil check light. The check light used to go away after some idling. I checked the level of engine oil but it was fine. I thought there is some problem in wiring that is why check light is on. The handbrake light was already always on because of wiring issue. Then on 1st of January 2018, my wife got brain hemorrhage, went unconscious till 7 January and then left us. I used to drive regularly in that period. On 5th January, while coming back to home the engine started loud noises and pick was decreased. I showed it to a mechanic. He said the engine oil pump had stopped working, you need to overhaul this engine. I parked the car in the same spot for 3 months where you can see in the first image of this post. For 3 months I was out of fuel, out of charge, out of this world.
I slowly started interacting with people and made mind to swap the engine instead of overhauling. I went to Shubba Bazar, Peshawar along with a mechanic (Gul Said of Kohat Road, near Civil Quarters) whom my cousin recommended. I had in mind to buy Vitz 1.3 or 1.0 auto transmission. Mechanic was suggesting Wagon R 1.0. A child was showing us Wagon R 1.0 engines in a shop. Two Wagon R engines were lying side by side. He uncovered one and left the other covered. I asked him is the 2nd engine damaged? He said its turbo. Hearing the word turbo my ears, eyes and mind stopped at that engine. The mechanic told me its fuel average is low, if you get any problem in turbo you won't be able to get it fixed easily. I convinced him to let me buy the turboed one. We bought for 40,000 and the work started.
As I was not on job, I used to come to the workshop earlier in the morning and then go back home around 9 pm. Most of the work is done in front of me. One first day as half day was passed. Mechanic only fitted engine in the engine bay for the welder to check. On 2nd day they started the engine, hearing the back-fires and the spooling of turbo brought a real fake smile on my face after months (I've lost real smile forever, hence I've used real fake smile). Since my childhood, I loved to hear loud exhausts (Yes, I am ricer
). Most of the 3rd day was taken by the welder to weld foundations for engine.
I don't remember all the days. Fourth day was last but there was a problem. It was Thursday. On Friday they are off and the mechanic had an event to attend on Saturday, Sunday. So if the work isn't completed on Thursday, it will be completed on Monday. But I needed the car before Monday on Saturday 7th of April because it was my 2nd marriage on 8th of April. The mechanic asked his shagirds to work some extra hours and let Usman go home with his car.
I brought the car back in this condition. Picture is taken on Friday after wash.
So far, I am satisfied with all the work. Fuel average is between 7 to 10 km/l in city. 12 13 km/l long routes. I mostly keep the paddle pressed so I am sure fuel average can be increased with moderate driving.
Here is total cost list
3000 : Fuel tank cleaning and fitting fuel pump
1500 : Fuel pump
500 : 1 foundation
6000 : Gear lever
1000 : Gear lever fitting
40000 : Engine K10A Turbo
3000 : Axles
3500 : Speedometer
1500 : Electrician
4000 : Welding wala who made the foundation for the engine
700 : Silencer
8000 : Mechanic labor (he got the old engine for 8000). This mechanic negotiated with welder, with exhaust wala, with engine wala and many place on cost. But he didn't negotiate his own cost. He got the old engine as his labor. He is of high cost but he understand things.
I am using 55-watt HIDs in headlights. I always wished to have projectors as HIDs without projectors are blinding people. Yesterday I went to Saddar Peshawar and asked about bi-xenon projectors. Most of the shopkeepers told me projectors won't work with your normal headlight glass/lens as it has lines/flutes. I searched for lens without lines/flutes but all results negative. I came home and searched the web for a solution and found a thread in which a person explains how he removed the lines/flutes from headlight glass/lens. I bookmarked that thread, went to Saddar, installed projectors and took below pictures
The alignment wasn't done right. I did it today. I will post a picture of the new alignment later.
Here are engine bay pictures
An interior picture. I repaired the dashboard as well in the initial investment with dent paint.
