Abnormal Engine Sound!

My Toyota Corolla SE Saloon Automatic has developed an abnormal cranking sound in the engine. This sound had developed six months back. This olny comes at high RPM .If I drive at less than 2000 rpm it is barely noticeable. I went to different local mechanics but all have diagnosed different problems. I also took it to Toyota Southern motors but they claimed that the problem will be identified only after opening the engine. One mechanic told me it was the sound of Exhaust manifold and it will be removed after replacing it. I told him to replace it and if the sound doesn't go away I won't pay him any money. I got the manifold changed but still the sound didn't go away so I again replaced my old manifold. Another mechanic told me that I had to replace the entire engine costing 80,000 PKR from Shershah!!

The car is running fine just the sound is disturbing me. None of the mechanics have diagnosed similar problem so I doubt which one to trust and I am also told that these mechanics are not expert in Automatic engines.

Need help if similar problem occurred with anybody else or if any of you can recommend me a good mechanic. I want to get it repaired before it gets worse.

P.S The sound is more prominent when the engine is cold.

Intake manifold ?

If the car was run on cng there's a probability the grill mesh inside got blown just get those removed and it'll be fine.

P.s no need to get a new manifold.

The car is running on petrol since beginning. I got the manifold changed but the noise still persists.

heard from some xperts... grills or plates inside intake manifold in mechanics language... when they broke creates a lot of noise mostly during cold start...sounds likh shhhhhhhh or kir kir kir !!
i don't know any solution but mechanics say get those plates or grills removed from the manifold ... n the annoying sound goes away !!!

Had a similar problem and that was the remedy for it.See if it helps...

have the same problem in my city 2003 the oil pump was not working fine and my cars's crank ran dry and started giving stange sounds on high rpm . just swapped assembly from d13b to d15 b in 40000

Turned out to be piston slap. The water body leaked causing the engine to run hot and burning the head gasket. Today I got the head opened and saw the pistons inside the cylinder there was a sideways movement. Now my mechanic tell me to replace the rings to decrease the clearance. But I think that the connecting rod bearings must also be worn out due to the piston slap.

I have given the head to a lathe shop for repair. I am confused whether to replace the rings or not . I am not in a mood for more expense. I googled it and learnt that there is no use to replace the rings only as it will wear out again in no time. Any suggestions ???

Have you been checking the oil level of engine. Or changing it time by time. .sometimes the engine monting crackdown and engine starts viberation

dont just wiggle the pistons, get a bore gauge and large micrometer to check the cylinders and pistons, they are designed a bit loose on the toyota Z type engines, the rings are also low tension to reduce friction. How did you come to the conclusion that the oil pump starved? did you do an oil pressure test?

Reringing wont restore the engine if the bores are bad or if the crank is bad. In the case of severe wear you can buy a short block engine and use your old cylinder head and transmission.

I don't think there is any facility here in karachi to do the oil pressure test. However I got the head fixed and put it back on. The temperature problem is fixed but still there is clapping sound. The oil level is Ok.

Now I am thinking of selling the car and replacing with a newer model as I don't want to get more involved with this engine repair hassle and all !

Yeah i think that the best way is checking where the noise come from than you should overhaul the engine and check all part that possible making the noise...

Dear Experts,

I have a Civic VTi Oriel 2006 (Prosmatec) that also runs on CNG. Lately my car has developed a problem that it gives knocking sort of a sound on lower rpm when it runs on petrol. At higher rpm there is no sound, moreover when the engine temp is low (in the morning) there is no such sound. It only comes up when the temp has reached to normal.

On CNG it runs absolutely fine, and since then i the petrol consumption has considerably gone up and pick has lost its traditional civic spark...

I need some help to figure out the issue!!

Timing is advanced for CNG running for better engine performance. May be the advancer / emulator (if installed) is malfunctioning get it examined. Nothing so serious

Dear capsat,

I went to the CNG technician but he said that CNG's advancer oly works while the car is running on CNG, on pertol it has no role to play so the knocking sound that you hear is difficult to track down. He suggested me to get it scanned first and check if everything else is in order like injectors and related stuff.

Do you know any reliable CNG technician who is competent to understand the issue??
