0w20 will be covered by 5w20. 0w20 covers a range from less than -30 degree C to more than 40 degree C

water in radiator has coolant which is anti freeze and anti rust, apart from other things, so how does tap water mixed in coolant make a radiator leak .. please explain

I drove to Poland with my friend and I was surprised - driving at 150km/h and the engine rpm was at staggering 4500?
I think I have 3.27 diff in the back, what is the solution to lower the rpm? Change to a diesel engine diff?

On the way, I reached 170km/h and saw loads of blue smoke from the exhaust. Thought Scheisse, something wrong with the engine.

Stopped the car after 5 km, checked engine oil and etc. and found out that I just cleansed the system of old soot.

After that on the way - No smoke, nothing.

@xulfiqar having a problem with the x5 that alternator with engine at idle and no load is only providing 12.1 v whereas battery with engine off is giving 12.6V
It has a brand new BMW battery installed for 79k before the battery change it was a intermittent fault sometimes 13.6v sometimes lower from the alternator old battery was some SEK branded cheap battery
Also having fluctuating interior and exterior lighting with the headlights on at idle
But no error message or battery discharge light of any kind
Dewan says it's a faulty voltage regulator though with my research on BMW forums they recommend to change the whole alternator as if it was a faulty voltage regulator it would cause fluctuating or even over voltages and it's actually very common problem on these x5s

So what do you think if alternator has constant low voltage is it the regulator or the alternator ?
There's a a huge price difference between the two but Dewan has a brand new alternator (I think it's Valeo) in stock but voltage regulator will take 45 days
I am inclined towards changing the alternator will it fix the issue or can I get away with just the regulator ?

Alternator is nestled deep down I really want to fix it right the first time
Already Dewan broke a plastic coolant hose connection and I had to order a new one when they tried to take out the fan to get to the pulleys

I once replaced voltage regulator in Mitsubishi alternator but eventually it also went bad after couple of months, had to replace alternator. In case of BMW one should replace it with genuine part.

Thanks your experience is helpful for me as that's what the forum people said as well regulator only lasts a month or two
Will order the new alternator from Dewan it's a cool 150k RS whereas regulator is 26k
No body seems to keep one in regular market they only have kaabli ones and tell me stories like how one guy had been a parts manager at Shahnawaz previously and always recommended higher alternator amp models than the original ones as they work better
I doubt both his statements lol

Can you ask them to confirm that they have coded your battery correctly? Was it an AGM type battery they installed? I assume you have an E70 X5. If so , it probably needed to be coded to tell the ECU that the car has a fresh battery.

Rebuilt alternators cost around $130 for X5 3.0L 6cyl.

It's a older e53 2006 they did connect it to their BMW DIS scan tool and reset the steering sensor as well as full scanned it and some other stuff which should include coding if required though I would still ask them again

Edit: it seems like a maintainence free lead acid battery not AGM

Yep but hard to find in the market here
Though by my research matching the sort numbers online the cheaper rebuilt units I was seeing were $400-500
And lot of people had bad reviews as they often contain bad quality parts like bearings etc
I intend to keep the car 6-7 years so intend to fix it right the first time

@arzaam...try to find a service manual with alternator repair procedure mentioned. that way you can narrow it down, or try a full field test

I found out you can't do a alternator bench test on mine
The alternator directly talks to dme or ecu in other words
The only repair procedure that Dewan showed me on their system which contained all service manual and other info showed replacement of voltage regulator as on scanning there was a fault code relating to voltage regulator, they seem confident it's only the regulator but I am not so

I did search a BMW online parts site but that only showed me mounting bracket and regulator as replacement items
You can't get bearings or diodes erc and rebuild it

I don't think the ecu itself needs remating to the car but a couple of sensors the sunroof sound system etc have to be re programmed
They did spent 20min with the DIS scan tool after changing the battery though I didn't actually get to see the IT room where the data was showing as they were scanning it wireless from a 50meters away

I think full field test is possible but would require the alternator to be removed and it's nestled deep down in the engine
They charge 8k RS labour to get to it

I think you may be on to something here I checked and only e53 that requires coding is one with the n62 v8 engine which mine is
So it's possible they forgot
I'll call them up tomorrow and will have it done again in front of myself regardless

Guys sorry for all the commotion
Started the car again for longer and also revved it a bit
Turns out BMW alternators have a time delay in them they don't start untill car warms up or you rev to 1500rpm presumably to lessen the load on engine whole starting or on alternator when belts have some slack on cold or something according to BMW forums
Anyways it's pumping out 14.1 volts with all accessories on high beams xenons fan blower front and rear climate on max etc and 14.4v with only basic accessories
So for now will just order a voltage regulator and keep it with me if I need it as recommended by Dewan but won't be needing a new alternator
