This area of the U joint is swaged in as you can see 4 dimples on the casting, welding it will cause localised heating and can burn up the grease inside rendering the joint useless in a few weeks - and I can bet you a million rupees they used garbage grease or assumed the clear petroleum jelly in the new joint was some sort of genuine grease.
This joint is available as a whole unit in aftermarket and also as genuine part - do not weld or do anything crazy to it unless you have the correct jig and mandrels to swage in a new joint.
This is a safety critical part of your car, if this joint malfunctions and locks up or disassembles itself while car is in motion you will lose all control of the steering wheel. This is why the manufacturer has swaged in the joint.
