Best engine for mark2 1974?

can anyone suggest me the suitable engine for my mark2 1974 i am not interested in v6 or v8 coz i keep this ride for family use and in daily drive .what is the performance of its original 18R engine and approx cost .I run this ride on CNG.please advice

i guess a 4th or 5th gen 3S-GTE would be arnd 85K... a 3S-GE would be cheaper.... Parts for all toyota's are quite easily available now...

Sorry my bad... i meant a 3rd or 4th gen 3S-GTE... BTW there is a dual VVT-i one but its not toyota so it cant be called a 5th gen...

and abt the price of the engine... MAXPOWER isb was selling a cple of 3rd gen non VVT-i for arnd 80K and the 4th gen VVT-i was sold a bit higher then that...

In my opinion, its original engine 18R is good enough to carry you and ur family around town. If these engines are in good conditions, they will run for years.
Alterations is a costly exercise, and mostly it is for increasing performance of car. you will be needing to upgrade brakes, change transmission etc. And the dilemma is, if it gets wrong then you will end up in nothing.
Rather then spending on changing engine, do the following in one go:
- Rebuild engine with original spares (only if it needs overhaul)
- Get a body work done i.e Dent/Paint etc (if needed)
- Get a complete brake service (Compulsory)
- Get a complete suspension overhaul (Complusory, i would suggest replace suspension part instead of repairing)
- Get electrics alright
- Install a A/C
- Get the seats and interior accessories upto date.
- Replace all tyres

18R is good engine, and if tuned properly can give you good mileage as well. Getting a good CNG tuneup will add economy.

Let it remains a nostalgic japanese car, dont mess with it.

I am not interested to install 1jz or 2jz as mr farooqi says i have to change whole suspension and brake as well.
@Afaooqi yes you are currently my car have 2lt diesel engine when i bought it .now the denting is comleted and starts the paint job tomorrow .I will also a have plan to go shershah market to search out 18R or 22R engine and have a plan to install turbo in it .is it possible to install turbo in 18R.I read about 18RT engine which produce around 135 hp .also post the pic to get more idea for rebuild .

i totally agree with afarooqi.........the original 18r will be the right choice......try to keep your car in original condition.........1jz 2jz and u r in a mess trust me.........I am telling u through experience........infact a mark2 74 if dented painted decently with its original engine and nice interior will do all what u want...............

some update denting is completed and now I started the paint job

tmkhan, before starting paint job, try to install engine if want to switch from diesel. get all the engine & suspension jobs before starting paint. if you have to wait for this, please wait, bcuz it is worth it. dont haste for anything.

you are right but i didnt the painter didnt do the finishing and rubbing he do it after all work done .i get the 18R engine in 32000 without gear is it reasonable price for it ?

bro this engine is a very normal engine, very tough, NA , no turbo's and it can be a perfect daily driven drive, 3s is not a bad idea ,

1JZ as a daily in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><st1:country-region><st1:place>Pakistan</st1:place></st1:country-region> is not practical at all because
of high fuel costs and converting it to CNG would prove pointless.
I would stick to 18R but please go for a much bigger radiator
for obvious reasons.

it is very hard to find a 3s .... and no spares with kabaris .... although a very tough engine,a good daily driver(as i drive one on petrol)

i found the 3s kabli engine in shershah market but the prices of 18R U engine are tooo high the asked 85 k for 18RJ with gear box and 18u about 65k without gear box:(
