You are confusing fuel economy with these oils, which are all essentially in the same range of viscosity and thickness.

20w50 and 5w30/0w20 will have some differences in fuel economy. But 0w20 or 5w30 of different brands will have same under the same conditions. Not a big difference at all.

11km/l with one and 15km/l with another is a joke. The difference in fuel economy you're seeing is because of:

1. different road conditions, incline/decline, congestion
2. Different throttle positions

Nothing else. It's not because you chose X brand over Y and you suddenly got a 4 KM/L increase under the same conditions.

You saw the difference because of your:

1. Your confused mind
2. Different driving and road conditions.

NOT because of X brand over Y.

Driving conditions have been similar for me throughout last 2 years from point A to B, apart from some highway tours where it doesnt matter much because the car is being driven at constant speeds and the mileage variation is minor.
The viscosity ranges are similar but there are other things like the kind of base oil used and oil additives. Better that you google it up before commenting.
You are more than welcome to have a difference of opinion but it wont hurt you to choose better words next time.

It has been out of stock on Daraz and I dont trust local vendors in my city hence I never tried it.

1kr after 2014 with redesigned head has no more this oil consumption issue. The issue is till 2014 pre facelift 3rd gen vitz n passo.

Your claim of 11 vs 15 km/l on the same oil grade is just not right (you are mentioning a huge difference, not small). The difference you saw was because of different driving, road, and fuel condition.

Not because you chose X over Y brand.

0w20 compared to 5w30 might give 1km/l or even 2km/l increase in fuel efficiency. But not a day and light difference.

You are comparing two light oils, not thick (20w50) and light (0w20).

So, your claim is anecdotal at best and subject to tons of variables. But of course, it's a free forum, people can agree or disagree.

Would you by chance have more data regarding the same ?
Like roughly how much oil was used and exactly how much the engine was driven on the same ?
how the oil appeared when you were changing it.. like had it thinned out, had it darkened, etc etc
Fuel average for each oil.

also, i believe shell 5w-30 4L bottle is for 3800 rupees. not 3k. 10w-40 is for 3K

Bottomline of the discussion above which i have concluded is that majority of the experts here prefer 0w20 over 5w30. Whereas in some other thread, i came to a conclusion of 5w30 as the recommended choice.
One of our brother here discussed a case scenario above of his own car and i am in a same scenario, my car 2013 passo almost 1lac kms done,was previously on a thicker oil 20w50. Then i was given a suggestion to reduce the viscosity grades to 5w30 as thats recommended and do it stepwise(don't directly jump from 20,50 to 5,30)
As i didn't have much knowledge regarding engine oils, i did it by following sequence from 20w50 to 10w40(zic) to 10w30(caltex havoline) now. With the current grade i.e 10w30, the engine has had a very good progress and feels quite happy in regard to its pick, acceleration response and sound. The health of the engine seems fine. No smoke noticed from exhaust. I was planning to change it to 5w30 in the next oil change but seeing the above discussion, it seems like 0w20 should be opted.
Please help me solve thís query of mine !

there is no need for any gradual change in viscosity - just drain out the fill the right stuff that was specced by manufacturer.

you wont gradually change ATF if your mechanic put SAE 140 gear oil in it would you?

For now, the car is already running on 10w30 for me with an improved performance.
Yes, i am planning to do that on the next oil change, revert to the manufacturer's recommendation.

But we being amateur's in this category always have to go with a second opinion of some experts like you @xulfiqar bhai. Anyways, thanks for the response.

Salam. Sorry for the late reply.
My car has now done 5000kms on the above mentioned oil (Havoline 0w-20). I kept on checking for any oil drain from the initial 1000kms and Alhamdullilah till now there is zero to none reduction in the oil as per the dipstick (might have lost some little quantity but the dipstick shows oil above the second dot till now) .
Now about the performance. I must say the car has been pretty happy on this oil and the little vibration and sluggishness i was feeling in initial 0-40kmph has somehow disappeared (if not totally gone still a day and night difference). Drive wise there is major improvement as compared to before.
Now coming to the main part, FUEL AVERAGE. Throughout my usage i've checked the average both from the metre and calculated manually. On light foot with A/C and within city the car has given me somewhat 15km/ltr. And these days without A/C its averaging at about 16-17 km/ltr. Unfortunately i've not been to any long journey so cannot comment on its avg at long route.
Overall the car's behaviour has changed for good and i'm pretty happy with my decision. I would like to advice everyone here to please listen to what your owner manual says and please avoid listening to anybody else. Thankyou.

Need suggestion.
I switched my 2013 passo, 1lac driven from 10w40 zic to 10w30 havoline, the car was ok with regards to performance but after driving it for 2500kms, it has started to eat oil. Currently it is 3800kms done and next oil change is due at 5000kms. And the dipstick level is at midpoint of the highest nd lowest levels. For instance, i m sharing the picture as an example of the current oil level at 3800kms.

What next step to be adopted? Top up? Or revert to 10,40? Your opinions would be appreciated !
