I do agree, having driven the E60, F10, E300, and A6, here are my observations.
The Bimmers are definitely sportier of the pack, with or without sports suspension. The Merc is the boat amongst the cars. It takes a little longer to hit higher speeds and lacks any feel of the road. Means it is oriented towards the luxury and less towards the driving experience.
The A6 lacked all. It does not have luxury of sportiness. I felt it was a mixture of Merc and Bimmer characters, but completely uninspiring. The only Audi which gives some driving pleasure is A7.
Amongst E60 and F10, the E60 has better road feel and the "Bangle attitude". The F10 was design to bring the 5er in line with the classic BMW styling.
The E60 is also prominent for having non-turbo changed naturally aspirated engines, until the LCI. The other thing which sets the E60 apart is the M5, which was the last V10 BMW will ever produce.
The F10 has been upgraded with plenty of gadgets, as well as some subtle changes to the interior. Though, this has resulted in an increase in body weight.
A friend drives a 435i daily while his father drives a S400, compares the drive and reports the same boat feel in Merc S400 and a ballistic missile feel in his 435i. The basic difference is in the thought process of the 3 German companies.
