Buying a Used Car in Canada.!

Hi guys , I am about to get married INSHA ALLAH in January 2014 , so I cancelled my plan of financing a new car in Edmonton Alberta , as I would be needing finances after for sponsorship and other things..!! So after giving a long thought decided to buy a used car under $5000.

So after starting my search on Kjjiji (OLX of Canada) , I found many different cars under $5k, some are old and luxurious with good miles but have less value example like this Jaguar S type 2003;

So I was thinking to take some suggestions from you guys,
1. Is it good to buy these high end cars in Used ? somewhere around 180k kilometers..? example includes BMW,Merc etc.

Is it good to buy North American vehicles.? if buying them , what millage should I look for.?
My brother is insisting me in buying Japanese cars and saying Japanese vehicles are even good for 230K millage too.?

and my taste in cars is some thing above compact sedans , below 4 Litre or above vehicles, No vans and I don't much care about fuel consumption as my usage would be minimally within city only and not much.

so what would be your suggestion and please mention it in detail..!!

I can comment later in detail. But stay away from jaguar bmw audi mercedes with high miles.. It will be PIA.. High miles and these cars are very expensive to maintain. I would suggest look for Honda, Toyota, Subaru like stuff. Germans or any other luxury at this tone of a major change coming in your life is a big NO. Congrats on shadi. But dont buy a barbadi..

Stay away from any Euro car. I would suggest you to buy Honda, Toyota, Acura, Nissan or Lexus.

First of all, congratulations.
It seems as if your settling down there at the moment. At this time, you need something reliable and cheap to maintain. Go for a Toyota. Look for a hatchback/sedan with the lowest miles you can find.

Strongly agree with this. Dont buy high end luxury cars under 5,000 dollars. Thats just stupid. If your budget is 5 grand, one thing is clear, you'll only find an old car with high mileage. Your goal is to find out which car is reliable after 100k-150k. Honda civic and toyota corolla are reliable cars even with high mileage. So I would say, go with a civic or corolla. Dont go with american or korean cars. Your insurance will be cheaper too which is also a good thing

UK wise all BMW Mercs are cheaper to repair avarge miles 100000 nothing wrong with Germans personnel experience.
curretnly using jaguar x type diesel on 05 plate bought it in 2008 only changed injectors and once break pads and couple of times service.
i do 39 miles daily trip on it.
had e class 2002 diesel 220 before that car did over 140000 miles did not chage pads once had no trouble at all when I bought it was on 90000.
japs make good cars but with simple engine.leuse to heavy on fuel.

Thank you all for replies, so today decided to just look for good Japanese cars, started my search with a Honda Accord 2003, 166k miles for $4900, condition was spooky a Pakistani Mechanic was selling it Not a good start in looking for a vehicle..!!!

Go for lexus it will do what ever you want
But mileage is a issue

Average mileage in UK is 100000 for 6-8 year old cars and most of the BMW or Mercs having this much is not a problem even 316 or 180 is ok with this miles on clock they still go on for 190000 miles with out major problem.
100000 miles is equal to 155000 km roughly

If its Jaguar S type V6 with duratec engine used in Mazda and Ford then do not buy it. Had a bad experience with my last jaguar.

for Merc, BMW, and Audi they are reliable cars and cant be compared to normal Japanese cars, but i guess North American version of japanese are better spec. So a good Camry and Accord will also be good. I dont really think German cars fall apart at high miles, thats my personal experience. I dont really know about Canadian car market price wise, but you should go for a decent german or if not japanese make, and yes forget about Jaguar S or X type there is a reason Jaguar stopped making these models XF and XL series are awesome but i dont think you will be able to buy those in 5000.

any car you buy, check for mileage and its service history and yes dont buy from machanics!
