Updated: I have sold my Chevrolet Joy due to spare parts and mechanic availability issues. After Mehran and Joy experience, i did lot of research and have bought Vitz 2003 1st Generation. At last, i am very happy and research is paid off. Vitz 2003 1st Generation, spare parts are cheap and available easily. Its engine price is only Rs.16,000. AC and fuel economy are very good. Automatic is fun to drive.

I would like to share my car buying experience with PakWheels community.

Before buying Chevrolet Joy 1000cc, I did through analysis of 660cc, 800cc and 1000cc cars in terms safety, fuel efficiency, AC, comfort, no noise, space, power steering, power windows, interior/exterior and long life spare parts. The cars were included in this analysis were Cultus, Alto, Vitz, Mehran, Coure, Mira, JDM Alto.

Chevrolet Joy 1000cc was the winner. I knew it was out of market car. Difficult to find its spare parts and mechanics. I decided to take risk because more risk more profit . I want to keep new car for long time because car depreciation is huge after few years (3 to 4 lakhs).

I bought Chevrolet Joy 1000cc in Rs. 4,40,000. Crap new Mehran (would say civilized rickshaw) price was Rs 7,00,000 including docs.

Me and my family (especially my mom) loved my new Chevrolet Joy car. It met all requirements which I set before my analysis. I drove it 165 km/h. It was like bullet. Please don’t drive on this speed. It’s too fast and dangerous. I drove it on empty Faisalabad motorway. Joy fast drive experience was safe in every aspect. AC is powerful. It gives 18 km/l without AC and 16 km/l with AC on motorway.

Where I faced problems were its spare parts, mechanic and electrician. I did research and find out new and used spare parts contacts. Later came to know that every petrol engine is same so its engine is also like any other 1000cc car. Every “good mechanic” can work on its engine. Its electric system is different from Japanese cars but a “good electrician” who works on latest computerized cars can do its work. Once he goes through its wiring. He knows everything.

To have great experience, tips to maintain this car are as follows:
1. Make sure all “Grips in wiring are perfect”. Damaged or loose grips will keep you in trouble all time. Due to damaged and loose grips sensors and other electrics produce problems.
2. Make sure all water pipes of cooling system (radiator etc.) are not weak or damaged.
3. Change engine oil (on 2500 km), oil filter and air filter on time.
4. Tuning on time.
5. Add good coolant in radiator to keep engine cool.
6. Keep car engine and body neat and clean.

If your car doesn’t start or you find problem in current, inspect following things:
1. Check petrol is coming.
2. Plugs have current.
3. Ignition coil, camshaft and crankshaft sensors and their grips are fine.
4. If still do not find issue, use computer to diagnose the issue.

I am also looking for a low budget car and Chevrolet Joy was one of the options, but people around me including friends, relatives and even mechanic have discouraged me from going for this option. Common people are afraid to try new things they follow public. Now days imported cars are everywhere. You have to spend 10 lakh to 12 lakh to get such car. For point of depreciation, after 3 to 4 years, its price reduces from 2 to 3 lakh. In same case with Joy, there is no huge depreciation. Car is not such asset which increases with time. It always decreases with time which is lose of money.

This car is not for a person who do not do good care of his car. If you have good knowledge of your car and take care of it. It will never disappoint you. Its your companion so you should learn about it.

A good mechanic changed rings of Joy 5 months before. It worked great. It was his first work on Joy. As i said, petrol engines are same. Every petrol engine contain tappets, valves, pistons, head, crank block and gear. Mechanic and electrician should have good understanding of EFI engines like Vitz, City, Santro etc. I contact Saleem in Karachi and i get genuine parts from company at my office after 2 days by leopards courier. Local shops selling china or local made spare parts at price of original.

Saleem is very nice guy. Basically Sebastian is running the setup who was in Chevrolet company. I get original genuine parts in 1 to 2 days. I have found them very honest. They never cheated or disappointed me.

Do try Lakhvi Autos.... They are importers and were authorized parts dealers for chevrolet back when nexus was in buisness, still they import parts themselves for chevrolet plus all imported cars including Rexton. They have a shop in Karachi as well as in Lahore but I guess with a different name.

Don't go for Joy because it gives issues specially for first owners. First owner cannot have it. My suggestion is do not go for Suzuki. Conclusion is Suzuki has no build quality. Continues maintenance. No pleasure of driving and travelling.

Go for Toyota. I would suggest you Vitz 1.0 1st generation. It's great car.
