No big idea BUT CIVIC is WOW... N Quality (as compared to local Corolla) ! Corolla 1.6 is more Economical and better than rest corollas Dude... If you can find a good Civic piece (under 20k kms) then go for it and sell it in 2014 N Buy the new one ! Do keep the low economy of civic in mind !

I have kept corolla altis both 1.6 & 1.8. Also civic 2011 & nowadays using new civic 2012.
Since you asked only about 1.6 altis & the old shape civic, here goes my honest comparison:
Build quality: Corolla is better.
Beauty: Civic (both interior & exterior)
Cabin noise: Civic is extremely louder as compared to the 1.6 corolla.
Ride comfort: Corolla much better.
Handling: Definitely civic.
Brakes: Both are excellent.
Consumption: There's no comparison, corolla is much better (civic gave me around 8km/l, corolla around 13km/l in city)
Acceleration: To be honest, there's actually no difference! (although civic has the higher displacement & power, but corolla has much higher torque)
Top speed: Civic wins here.
Maintenance: Corolla is much cheaper.
So if I were you, I wouldnt give any second thoughts & go for the corolla!
(If you consider the new shape civic, thats a totally different area, & the comparison would ultimately change altogether)

dont buy civic i hve a civic and also altis i like altis most its ride is smooth economical and powerfulll but i dont like honda its not comfortable but style is goood of civic CIVIC 8.5/10 and ALTIS 9.8/10

ur comparison is 100 percent is tilt towards corolla , looks like u r a corolla fan

built quality , CIVIC is much better.
maintenance , that days r gone , CIVIC n coralla maintenence are parallel or some times civic is cheaper, that coz of honda is using all the parts of THAILAND , where as toyota is using all japenese parts ,

Bro isn't Altis 1.8 Cruisetronic more responsive than Civic PT? I found Altis 1.8 Cruise more responsive than Civic PT. One thing is for sure. Altis's triptronic transmission is the thing to die for.

Yes switchtronic transmission is a very nice feature
No bro , Civic Vti oriel pros 2005 and Reborn prosmatec both have a more responsive transmission than Altis
In terms of top speed and acceleration 0 to 180
Reborn> Altis> Civic 2005
But driving civic 2005 from 0 to 200 was much more fun than accelerating Altis 1.8 (new shape) from 0 to 170

local corolla, may it be any trim, is by far the most dumb, bogus and boring car to drive. absolutely no driving pleasure at all. However, Axio is fantastic. so in ur case, civic all the way. i dont know how corolla comes anywhere near civic in any department

For people who are calling me a corolla fan, read my comment again. I am driving a new shape 2012 civic (VTi Oriel Prosmatec), & im absolutely in love with it.
The comparison was between 1.6 corolla altis & 1.8 old civic.
If you all think this is out of pure corolla love, I can show you a picture of both my reborn & altis standing side by side (though I am not in anyway answerable to anyone here).
Old shape civic no doubt has a much better resale as compared to the 1.8 altis, but the 1.6 has a resale comparable to that of civic (I sold one of each, both sold like hot cakes).
The problem is that, corollas before 2008 weren't even comparable to the comfort level of civic. But since then, the altis (NOT GLi or XLi) has improved tremendously.
Im not saying the reborn is not a good vehicle, but the 1.6 corolla (launched here in 2011) is a better option as stated by the facts in my previous comment as compared to the civic (launched in 2006).
5 years CAN make a difference people!

The cars in my garage nowadays are: 1.8 Altis cruisetronic 2009, Civic VTi Oriel Prosmatec 2012, & Prado TX limited 1999. (MashaAllah)
The only thing about the corolla I like is how fast it is. Blows my civic in the dust, literally. (Only due to the tiptronic transmission. This transmission has much more inside of it than the + & - shifting. Its pretty interesting. You should google it when you get free time).
For the rest, the new civic is much better in each & every aspect as compared to the corolla in my experience of driving both
