Corolla GLI Radiator Fan Constantly On

Hi Pakwheelers, so I have a toyota gli 1.3 2013 model. The radiator fan was working okay as it should however recently I noticed that it starts spinning at full speed as soon as I turn the ignition on. I got it checked and relays, temperature sensor and whatnot seems to work fine. An EFI mechanic (who's popular for his experience of EFI cars) said that it was because of a faulty ECU and the ECU needed to be repaired.

My question, could it really be an ECU fault when the ECU shows no other symptoms except the fan? Is the ECU really repairable? What's the cost of a new ECU (kabli one)?

not exactly sure of the system of this model,
either the ecu takes signal from temp sensor and turns on fan,

or its the old school system, where the temp switch is turned on with the temp, which turns on the relay, which turns on the fan?

how did you check the temp sensor?

yes the radiator fan has its independent ECU - which trigger the low & high speed., something look like this, scrapyard item will cost you under Rs. 1500 make sure it is of same part number as removed from your vehicle

Thanks for the insight. Actually there is wire (green with red stripes) in the FAN control module with the heat sink attached to the radiator. That wire was not receiving pulse from the ECU. There was an IC in the ECU that was damaged, spent 5000 to get the ECU repaired and works like a charm now.

that wire is the PWM control line, Ive never seen a toyota ECU fail that controller unless some idiot literally shorted it out.Even then its protected internally.. It blows when someone shorts it with more than 16V

I am facing issue in my 2014 model GLI with 65k on odo, following are the details:

1. My car switches off on road and starts itself as engaged in gear.
2. When it switches off, I observe that the temperature warning light turns on for a brief period.
3. As soon car restarted, the light goes off as well.

Please note that the meter which shows the heat, always remaining at middle after a few minutes drive. The meter never crosses the middle level but car still shows the temperature warning light just for a brief period. I am always using Toyota coolant, never used water. And yes, the coolant was at the proper level.

What I did to resolve the issue:

1. I got it checked by a mechanic who after checking its thermostat, advised to change it and said that it is opening a little late. Replaced it with the genuine one.
2. Same mechanic suggested to get my radiator serviced as a safe side. Done that too.
3. Get it tuned, like plugs changed, throttle body and catalytic converter cleaned, etc.
4. Faced the same issue very next day, went to a electrician to get its fan and other wiring related things checked. Everything was confirmed as working fine.

The car is not showing the light regularly. After last tuning, I went for around 500 kms round trip with AC on all the time and speed between 80 to 120. It was behaving perfectly fine. After few days, car started to show the same problem.

I have spend around Rs. 20,000/- to resolve this particular issue, but staying at the same place as I was before.

i can recommend you to Babar near Mukka Chowk FB Area. they are professionals in these cars with all scanners and gadgets.

I am living in DHA vicinity therefore initially I shall prefer mechanic in the vicinity, or a nearby area.

Mukka chowk is faraway from my location, but if I could not fine here, than as a second option, I'll come to Mukka Chowk.

Fyaz. I think you should have gotten it scanned first.

you have a main power supply issue, check the main fuse box, it maybe faulty itself. Unless your car has a trakker and the idiots at trakker have cut the wiring and done more monkey business with it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll get its main fuse box and main wiring checked. Yes, tracker is installed but around 9 months ago and the car has started giving problems recently.

At the time of tuning (few days ago) the car was scanned, showed no any error code

The units the tracking companies install are absolute scrap quality - they cause all sorts of issues, and you wont get any errors on the scan tool if the system shuts and restarts again. Toyota ECU are not that smart or refined either.

I still could not find any reason for restarting of the car. Based on the suggestion, I have now decided to take out the tracking devise. Will update here if it resolves my issue.
