D15B3 Redlining at 8k

I read at a million different places that the D15B 3-stage normally redlines at 7200 rpm.

While testing the acceleration on my 99 Civic Oriel AT (D15B3 currently running single vtec) out near devil's point today, I saw it going up to 8K before shifting gears... what is that indicative of (other than me flooring the crap out of the pedal)? Should it even be doing that?

PS. title says D15B3 but it's actually a D15B VTEC.

first of all d15b3 isnt a v.tec motor.

True, D15B3 ain't a VTEC motor, and it's carby if I'm not wrong

My bad... its a D15B 3-Stage... didnt realize i wrote the wrong spec in the title... mines a D15B 3-stage but courtesy of the stock ECU for PK6 I have a single vtec installed.

heh... just wanted to be clear that its a D15B 3-stage using a single solenoid setup (since 3 stage isnt possible without the proper ecu)... running on a stock paki civic ecu (dunno the code) and stock AT. final gear change (to 4th gear) was around 8500 RPM which has never happened before. But then i have never pushed the car this much before. Just wanted to be sure that it's not a Tranny issue.

i agree, i think that there is an incorrect signal coming to your cluster too. At 8500rpm you'd be experiencing serious valve float and you're risking your piston flying out of your head or even your block detonating.

you can verify the rpm buy fitting an aftermarket RPM guage toyour engine by hooking to power, earth & the rpm signal wire. Sourcing the rpm signal wire is a bit of a pain though (consult an electrician or a specialist).

his block (the D15B with 3 stage Vtec) should be cutting out at around 7200rpm. however since he's running a local D16 (i guess) ecu it is messing with the signals to his engine & cluster. 6-7000rpm is a good place to shift as the torque is gone by them but 7200rpm is where he should be hitting the rev limiter (which he isn't)

First the poster said it's a D15B3, which meant it was carby but since he said it's AT and VTEC, I had doubt the engine is carby, then he corrected and said D15B, that was the reason for asking if the limiter kicked in or not

Thats exactly the reason I asked if the car is on CNG or not, it's common that rev limiter doesn't kick in on CNG

But here I think Storm's statement fits in perfectly

no its not on CNG, but the previous owner did have CNG installed.

well i have a d15b dual vtec auto it does change on 6k but for auto its 5200 with its own dual vtec ecu

a cvt auto? the problem with me is that the auto trannies coming with d15B dual vtec are MMT (honda's version of CVT) which i have been warned against by Xulfiqar. So I dunno if changing the ECU and not the transmission would be a doable and wise choice.

Personally I really don't like the CVT transmission :-/
