@murtaza..no they dont!!! in my opinion..the older model blades with the inverted smaller bumper guards were the real deal...sigh...
@nmshaikh...no we decided to make do with a jerry can of water there...what u havent seen deployed in any of the pics tho...is the dome tent we had for out toilet:P it was a "twist and pack" style tent that deployed on its own once out of the cover...pop it right up..get the business done on the roadside and head on forward:P...see the BIG red disc like structure at the base of the roof rack...im sure u can in some of the pics...THAT is the toilet tent..it had no floor obviously:P

A quick question @rebel: This is NOT a Bug Roof Rack. To which car it originally belongs? Or is it a custom made roof rack?

This one is what I am getting replicated for Patina. Its a BeKoWa. As far as I know, there were three OEM companies for Roof Racks, being BeKoWa, HWE, THULE while VWOA (VWs Own Accessories) brand was a home developed brand which was used to market VWs own developed roof racks/accessories.

If someone is planning to replicate a BeKoWa, here are the exact measurements:

the tubes are 1/2" in diameter
from front to middle its 17 1/2"
from middle to rear 17 1/8"
front to rear 35 1/2"
front leg 6 1/4"
rear leg 7 1/4"
middle leg 6 1/2" does curve at the top
width of top 33 1/8"
length of top 39 1/8"
inner rack width 28 1/8"
inner rack length 34 3/4"
9 wooden slates

reezvan...a roof rack i would want for sure...but i hope it can take on some serious load and is not just for show...
as for the decklid rack... ur point is very valid...but...not only does it look awsumn!! it kinda adds wieght at the right spot over the rear wheels where she can take some... my car got too front heavy and thats why i moved a bag onto the rear bumper...vl have to cook up a design that looks original but has some movability in it too...heck i dint know there was so much out there in the rack world despite my search on them(admittedly little tho)... can u share with me some info on what the original should look like?? maybe we can make its supports telescopic so one can lift it and lock it without unmounting it, play with the engine and move it back dwn..just an idea...

i have a question old people!! what do u mean a roof rack for a ragtop? arent all roof racks taking support at the 4 legs like mine and mounted on the gutter ??that leaves plenty of space in the middle for a ragtop..atleast i think it does..dont it?? or are there models that put weight in the middle??

also another question!! how does one make sure that the rack does not destroy the paint?? my car has circular imprints where the feet stood and they cant be cleaned away...the rubber has left a pretty stubborn mark on each of the 4 corners...my car is in matte finish too so while polish might remove it and compound most certainly will...i cant do that...what precautions should i have taken in the first place??

use decklid stand-off's...big improvement in cooling, totally reversible when not required. I would have strongly recommended the stand-offs for this trip.

The roof rack for the RAGTOP too like the HARDTOP roof rack has total of six legs but all of these legs rest on the rain gutters instead of in case of the HARDTOP roof rack where two middle legs rest/tie it to the gutter while the front two and back two legs (remaining four) sit on the roof instead (just like the rack you have mounted on your bug in the pictures on this thread). So this is the basic difference. RAGTOP's roof rack has to be fitted on gutters because there is no hard surface for it to be resting on in the middle of the roof unlike HARDTOP roof racks.

Thats the basic point why I chose the under discussion "RAGTOP STYLE" BeKoWa roof rack. It sits in the gutters so there is low visibility even if the paint is damaged than what it would be if it sat on top of the roof itself (as in your case as you discussed above).

The only means to keep paint from getting damaged is to put a rubber damper on the surface of the roof where the legs of the rack sit and then make sure that the rack is completely fixed and just enough that neither it damages the paint nor it moves with a payload.

You can find small felt sticker patches..the kind you peel and stick under the furniture to keep from marking the hardwood floors or to keep it quiet when moved on another floor. That would keep it safe. You don't plan to drive around with the rack 365 days, so just peel and stick the felt patch when installing the roof rack. remove when done.

I would be happy to. Actually I'll just bring one set. These are so easy to produce and I had done that in the past for a lot of people. Any person making number plate letters could cast them for you with a sample. no point spending more money than you need to.

Khalid sahib may even have a few sets. Ask him. The ones he uses on his 66 are the locally cast ones from the sample I provided. mirror images...for about Rs.500 then..maybe a bit more now but still less than you'd pay for here
