Dated: 16 Dec 2019
(I studied one and half dozens of cars [Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Indonesian, Indian and Malaysian] in last 08 months and already posted few of their reviews in the forum. But when I discover this Glory 580, it has changed my entire selection and decision making process. I reviewed it extensively, test drove, conducted different field tests and wish to do a follow up review of the same car on its 25,000 km run by late 2020 and on 50,000 and 100,000 km run by late 2020 and 2021 if possible. Sharing for this review for those persons who understands basics of automobile and wanna buy a Quality Chinese car with Value for Money.)

1. Buying a Xtrail - A fight between two cars which has led me to write this review
I was studying different cars since the beginning of 2019 just to buy one for me as Government has started giving car lone. I started with Allion, Premio, impressed by stunning Mazda 3 at midcourse, finally concluded to Honda Accord as Sedan choice. Then later phase since May 2019, I upgraded my desire to drive CUV/SUV and began my research with RAV4, CR-V, Tucson, Santafe, Haval H2, H6, Nissan Xtrail, Eclipse and Subaru XV etc. As I was watching videos, studying reviews on them for months, and often I was driving, carrying out field test few of those, each day my knowledge increased and wisdom grew. My decision swing between them for months and at last I was only swinging between two cars. The great Honda Accord and Nissan Xtrail within my own budget. Considering BD road and my probable destinations, I dumped the idea of buying an Accord. So I finally decided to buy Xtrail 2015 initially then switched to 2017 as itâs a new shape. So it was final, till I discover an Indonesian made CUV, same size, same height, little longer than Xtrail, similar looking, with 7 adult seats, the DFSK Glory 580. As it was very economic option, I started to put my hands on it and conducting my own research on it. It was an amazing discovery and now Iâm swinging between Xtrail 2017 and Glory 580/580i Auto.
2. Reading considerations:
Many of my colleagues has requested me to write a reviews on DFSK Glory 580/580i Auto due to their interest on it. I had my hands on it few times based on which Iâm writing this reviews. I also evaluated otherâs driving experience is different driving conditions. The reviews by me, are mostly based on my past experiences on self-driving, delivering driving training and management of transports, free hand field tests. (Well, my experiences are; I was a âDriving, Vehicle Management and Road Safety Instructorâ at home and abroad for many years on dozens of different light, medium, heavy vehicles including all-terrain vehicle, armored protected heavy vehicle, 24 wheeler, heavy transporter, flatbeds and so on. I delivered theoretical and field training to professional drivers on Bangladeshi roads and terrain, foreign mountains, desert, tropical mud, off-road, fording etc. I have also experiences of using high class cars in overseas Highways including Germanyâs Autobahn.
I have experiences of car behavior when it runs at 250 km/h. Due to my professional reason, I regularly drive many kinds of cars, Jeep, Pickups, Trucks, Armored cars and so on, which exceed more than 30 types so far. I attended Frankfurt Auto/Motor Show, visited BMW Welt/World in Munich and chased Paris- Dakar rally where I came across world class Powerful and Sophisticated machines, their mechanical magic, exterior and interior luxuries and details. I took offroad adventure with rugged 4x4 in Indonesian trail in Bogor and Southern Siberia, Russia.) During my evaluation, few measuring devices, car scanner, electrical gadgets were used, including basic tools. Though, a car review needs several days, but I had opportunities to do so by few hours in couple of days. The car I reviewed could be different than any other and it had 1340 km when I tested first time, in later tests the same car had near 5000 km on its Odo. Anyone may have different understanding or findings which may happen due to our background knowledge, experiences and road condition of evaluation. I might have missed to look at some good or some weak points of the car that exists. None has to agree all aspects I said, assessment is an individual responsibilities, all must do your own research and assessments while buying your car. Iâm just sharing mine. It took me 40+ days to study, conduct several tests and prepare this reviews.

3. Ground Test Conditions:
The car is tested in following locations having following road surface conditions:
a. Dhaka City â Asphalt road with smooth and mild undulated surface. (Tejgao, Gulshan, Banani, Uttora, Sher e bangla Nagar, Kllayanpur)
b. Sylhet Country Side â Sylhet- Tamabil Asphalt Highway, Herringbone roads through Singari Beel, Gravel Roads, Soft Sand field Surface, small mound climbs, Mud Tracks through Tea Gardens.
c. Bandarban Hilly Range â Up-hill mountain ascent drive and downhill assist descent test.
d. Rupganj - 300 feet highway, Jolshiri sandy and herringbone tracks, Cross country off-road.
e. Airport Runway â For high speed test.
f. Khagrachari-Sajek-Kanglokâ For high Altitude thin air test with fully loaded 7 adult + luggage.
We had highest speed 160 km/h at 5.5k rpm recorded at Dhaka Airport Runway (see video), 122 km/h speed at 3.6k rpm at Sylhet bypass (see video), 130 km/h in Dhaka â Mymensing road but it has 240km reading scale in speedo meter. In you tube video you will find people driving it 180km/h at 5.5k rpm in Indonesian road condition (see video). During our tests, the car was loaded with 5 adults at Dhaka airport test, 4 adult pax (Sylhet test), fully by 7 pax (Dhaka and Bandarban mountain roads), 3 pax in other tests.
g. Dhaka- Mawa- Padma Bridge Road : After first servicing high speed and NVH test. 175 km/h speed.
- Accompanying/Contributory Persons for this review
Different persons were present onboard during my driving or provided inputs during my evaluation. They were my senior colleagues Fayez, Imran, Zakaria, Khaled junior colleagues Ishtiaq, Samir, Russell with whom several discussions took place and info exchanged, gathered. I also learned a lot from few junior friends, itâs worth mentioning R. Khan from Australia and T. Mahmood from Chittagong, two experienced car enthusiasts. I also discussed issues with Glory 580 users from Indonesia and Peru DFSK Facebook groups.
THE CAR- Glory 580
5. Appearance:
When first I saw this car I felt like, itâs a popular model of a brand car, but itâs a new model since 2018. From a distance a black Glory 580 looks like a black Xtrail or and grey one looks like Outlander. This may be due to optical illusion of color and shadow. The appearance is well exposed by its front lamps, front grills and aero dynamic shapes with spoilers, sporty roof rails and shark fins. There are multiple ribs and curves across the bonnet and side doors. My other colleagues have sent me photo keeping it side by side with Mitshubushi Pajero of Progoti, Xpander, Toyota Rush, Honda Vezel. It looks much better and attractive beside all of those. Among all 5 colors, Black looks Dashing, Grey and Wine looks gorgeous. The Lion/Eagle Eyes Style front lamp wrapped with DRL is the most striking beauty (See Photo and Video). It gives a look of perfect CUV in every driving conditions.
6. Size, Dimensions and weights
Its size looks like equal to Xtrail 2015 but possibly little longer by few mm. Itâs little bigger and higher than CRV, RAV4 as well, but they look all same from a distance. The wheel base longer than Xtrail, 2780mm, ground clearance is 200, less than Xtrail by 20mm. The curb weight is 1510 kg (Xpander/Rush 7 sitters are below or around 1200 kg) having weight distribution 845/665 in front and rear axle respectively. The gross vehicle weight is 2035 kg. Interestingly it is longer in length, wider in width, longer in wheel base than Hyundai Tuscon, Toyota Rush, HR-V, Mitshubishi Xpander, Eclipse, Nissan Xtrail, Honda CR-V (width 10mm more in CRV), Honda BR-V, Subaru XV, MG JS and so on. (See the PHOTO and comparison chart I attached)
7. Engine:
It has engine named SFG15T, a 1500 cc in line four cylinder four stroke liquid cooled with turbo charger which produces 148 HP, 220 torque. I will discuss the rpm relationship to these numbers later. The turbo charger produces comparatively stronger power close to a 1800-2000 cc car or 40+ HP than a Toyota Allion/Premio (108 HP, 185 NM Torque). Itâs truly more powerful than any other (non-turbo) 1500cc engine as it is common to all Turbo Charged Engine. Try to understand horse power (HP), the unit which explains car engine power, not the carâs power. The drive train, wheels, transmission, skill level of driver all together make a car more capable than another. Thatâs why we see some 1250 cc~ Audi/BMW have speedometer up to 220 km/h.
The engine has silent drive timing chain mechanism and DVVT, multi-port injection transverse mounted for which no engine Vibration is felt and noticed by naked eye. I have not had required equipment to investigate it, but itâs a silent engine with Euro Emission Standard 5. The affiliated noise/sound seems ok, not heard any rocker arm, fan belt or other unexpected knocking. I had a debate in our viber group with a colleague, I canât remember his name about engine heat. He pointed it produces more heat, I donât know his rational, but after a long drive I tested the heat indicators found normal. His claim seems to me incorrect, misjudged at least with the unit I did my field test. He did see the same car because they have only one car to offer for test drive.
Iâm the first to receive the DFSK team at MP CP at Sylhet who drove all the way from Dhaka to Sylhet Cantt. The first thing I did, opened the boot and evaluated the engine heat by my naked hands. Judgmentally it was ok. Then I had my eyes on the Dash Board engine heating gauge that was ok too. But I could not do other rough tests to put the engine in to more stress by raising rpm to test how it heats up. May be next time.
For details visit official Indonesian Site:
https://www.dfskmotors.co.id/id/vehicle/suv-2
They says the engine is a FIAT of Italy. I could not find to study the track record of this specific engine. If I can, I will put the info here. But itâs a Euro Emission Standard- 5 Engine which mean itâs clean and environmental friendly. Only newly well designed engine can have that certificates from the agency. We have haval and Xpanders, common Toyotas having Euro Standard 2 or 3 standard engine. These days Standard 6 also available. This video below explains euro emission standard 1 to 6:
[The info provided in the review is subjected to be changed once modified info or findings gathered or received.]
8. Turbo Charger
The turbo charger is from Mesin of South Korea, the same supplier to many Honda Turbo charged engines. This produces 148 HP and 220 Nm torque from a 1500 cc Engine. Effective at 2k+ rpm onward. The veh has Turbo lag (common Phenomenon for all Turbo engines) for which initially it does not accelerate like non turbo cars which may disappoint many person who does not have ideas on Turbo Lag. But with CVT transmission, itâs a bad idea to accelerate fast from stand still. It may damage CVT. And why do we need to drive an urban family commuter like a Sports Car? It is not design to do so. Itâs never suggested for fuel economy and for the safety of CVT.
9. Gearbox/Transmission/Powertrain
The CVT gearbox is from âPUNCHâ which produces 1 million+ powertrains a year, supplies same CVT for few variants of European cars including BMW. Punch Powertrain is an independent full system supplier of fuel efficient powertrains. With nearly 50 years of experience in the production of transmission and CVTs, Punch Powertrain also offers electric powertrains for many energy efficient vehicles such as Hybrids (48V & PHEVs) and Electric Vehicles (EVs), as well as DCTs. Being an international player, punch has a strong presence in Europe and China, two large geographic area of the world where most cars are used. In addition to the headquarter in Belgium, the company runs 6 more R&D centers, located in Germany, France, the Netherlands and China, allowing close cooperation with the customer and short communication lines. Economies of scale are achieved by concentrating production in 3 facilities in Belgium and China. The Glory 580 Punch CVT is both FAT and MT which is a big advantage in demanding driving conditions. Note that the modified I Auto has a new gearbox they call CVT5 which has a torque converter and likely to be more fuel efficient.
10. Cooling Systems
The engine is suggested to be run by unleaded gas 92 ON or above. Radiator coolant needed approx. 6.5 liters and the fins and channels are cooled by two fans side by side instead of one (See image I attached). Engine oil suggested is SN 5W30 and it needs 4.5 liters. I could not investigate if any intercooler can be used or not for more heat efficiency.
11. Chassis, Frames, Engine Mounting and Crash Tests:
I could not do a proper diagonal test due to lack of facilities or space but tried on a road side earth hip. The Chassis didnât bend or twisted with four adult on board. It has a 5 star safety rating by C-NCAP, let me remind u. Itâs not BRTA, the C-NCAP must have crashed few glory 580 units to award that safety rating. I request you to watch following links and evaluate my remarks on it. The front crashed did not change anything of driverâs cabin or dashboard did not cracked or broke to squeeze the driverâs cabin. The front protection bars and shock absorbing space let it happen. All air bags deployed and seatbelts kept dummies in place. The most satisfying aspect the crash test from the side. When high speed dummy car hit it from side, glory 580 slide aside upright with no tendency of rolling or toppling over. Please notice how the suspension worked effectively to keep it upright. And I am impressed that due to very strong side protection bars, the side wall of the car is dented but not squeezed to smash the passengers inside.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j6lacO2tgg(for quick find see from 2:20 sec onward)
Look at this Xtrail Crash test, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCna0hJorqw glory had similar protection.
If u compare with other 7 sitter in market like Xpander or Toyota Rush Crash test, both Xpander and Rush got 4 Star rating and the crash test almost topple over the Xpander. The front collision on xpander has affected the dashboard and entire front became disintegrated. Here is the links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YALqymnALw
Just to compare with expensive cars crash test, I put a link that shows of crash results of 2019 BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90 â crash test.
I also put contemporary Vezel and CHR crash test in following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRWlGQ2ZbO0
12. Wheels :
Itâs a swap with Xtrail, 225/60R17. But saw different wheels to different countries. I heard, many components can be exchanged with Xtrail and other Toyota car. Need to confirm. But wheels of I Auto seems different. The wheels look smart and the I Auto is uplifted with 18â alloy. The width of the Tyre is contributory to its traction and maneuverability which we felt once we took it to soft sand. As a FWD vehicle it still roll over the sand. Track width of front and rear 925/975. (See my tests videos on Sand and Mud)
13. Brakes
ABS was tested from 70 km to a halt and took little more space to halt at a distance on Asphalt road. But encouraging was the vehicle stopped keeping its nose right ahead, right on course, on surface, no tilt, no skid, no swing. I should have test it few times. I could not test it on gravels and rainy conditions. I will try to carry out this test with camera on if I get an opportunity.
14. Interior:
The dashboard of Glory 580 looks fine with Carbon wrapping and Chrome touches on front, knobs and livers. The plastic is good quality and at places there is soft feel. The Glory 580 i-auto dashboard is inspired by BMW 7 Series. If someone says it a copy, none can disagree. But Im waiting to put my hands on 580 i-Auto soon if it comes to my place.
The seats of glory was as simple as price with artificial leather. Not stunning but itâs a presentable one. Still much better in looks than black or dark grey seats we see around. I wish the i-Auto will be great. And it has all 2 front bucket seats out of 7, 3 second row sits are just with ordinary feel and third row seats are spacious than Xtrail as a 7 sitter. The third row is much spacious than xtrail, CRV or equal range cars. The LCD is big but not that bright or contrast under strong sunny day we drove. The color balance looks strange to me. I didnât actually adjust the brightness/saturations/contrast. May be adjustment will solve this problem. However, it seemed to me too big. 10.5 inch. The i-Auto one is smarter as BMWâs floating display. (See the images and links I attached).
When they Glory team came from Dhaka, as I entered, it was very cold inside. But as we drove some time it felt that AC was not very cold. We investigated and found we messed up with settings pressing wrong buttons. We adjusted, it cooled the cabin but took time. It was a very sunny day. It has three vents set up for all three rows. But when I drove at a sunny day with full 7 human body emitting heat, it was absolutely ok. At night in Dhaka, we had to stop the AC few times for coldness and lower the temp set to 26 degrees C.
The cabin noise on highway or asphalt road was perfect to me. At speed lower than 60 km/h it was very calm. Engine was not heard much even when I was driving at 125 km/h. The wide tyre and road of our kind produces considerable noise which is usual. It makes no big noise in smooth road. I wanted to push more but the traffic didnât allow me. We heard body noise on pebbled road, uneven herringbone road. It was little louder than Xtrail I drove but silent than an outlander I drove with 16000 km mileage. We investigate a lot to find the reason. In some of the previous test, noise was loud later I came to know from my colleague Shakhawat that the DFSK driver didnât monitor the tire pressure. It was 45 psi in FW and 40 in RW. Oh My God! Shakhawat said after adjusting to 35 psi, the sound was normal. That was also improper. Actually the prescribed pressure is written on front right door which is 23 front and 25 rear. Check if this is ok or not. It was so comfortable and quiet then.
The steering is two way adjustable electric power steering and softer than vezel and Xtrail. Itâs a multi-function steering wheel, small in size for your leg movment, D shaped easy to hold.
[The info provided in the review is subjected to be changed once modified info or findings gathered or received.]
15. Sunroof
The sunroof is an added attraction of the Glory 580. Its blinds are manual and Tilt function, glass sliding is automatic. It has wind deflectors once itâs open. (See Video) The glass is a tinted, tempered one to protect the interior from UV ray and heat. Glass thickness is more than the door glass. It was seen very noiseless when it operate.
16. Drive Performances:
I took first it to difficult places. I took it to soft sand filled grounds where earth work was going on for land dev. I was scared it would stuck up. But still I took it as my jeep was behind me. Its 4x2 FWD car and it went on and on. At a soft spot it, stopped, struggled but it came out. I was not expecting this from a 4x2. Then I took over a Rubbles to check Ground Clearance and wheel behavior. The driver was not good. But it worked somehow ok. A good driver could make it an easy go.
I drove it myself in highways then on pebbled road, uneven herringbone road. We felt shakes, soft bumps in pot holes, big bumps on unplanned speed breakers at Sylhet and it was better than vezel. The next day I drove Outlander and Land Cruiser 4.6 which were both calmer, smoother. But another outlander in Tangail was noisier. Few days later I drove a Xtrail 2017 which had tyre pressure problem and it was ok after adjusting. At Dhaka Jolshiri area, I checked and ensured myself that the all tyre pressure of Glory 580 is according to the suggested psi. It was much smoother, calmer than before. It may be compared with Xtrail 2017 and Outlander as these are similar sized and weigh vehicles. The steering is much smoother, softer than Xtrail 2017.
Another finding from me is the car suddenly does not pull up. It takes time. This was also a complaint from my colleague Ishtiaq who was with us and drove later. To my judgment, itâs not a sports car, and itâs a common phenomenon of all Turbo Charged car, as Turbo Charger is triggered on 2.3K RPM or 60+ km/h. With this short period of time I could not figure it out whether itâs a drawback or common design limitation of Turbo Charged Engine. But once we reached above 60, when I pressed the throttle, the Turbo kicked off and the speed increased rapidly faster than vegel, Xtrail and MG I tested recently. Senior colleague Zakaria who was sitting next to me seemed nervous with sudden acceleration. It went from 70 to 120 km/h in few seconds. (See video and assess yourself). Itâs worth mentioning that I pulled it around 100 km/h with 3K RPM and 125 km/h with 4K RPM on flat highway.
To my judgment it speaks positive about the engine. It was more better driving feel than Xtrail 2017 and 2015 for me due to softer steering of Glory , better bucket seats and better blind zone management than Xtrail.
17. Uphill Drive
It was so os with auto gear D mode but better with S mode. The car was ok at long uphill turns and corners where car need to slow down for sharp turnings. Often it experienced Turbo Lag unless the driver was keen enough to handle it. This can be solved by switching to manual gear mode where u can put max traction by low gear (say for example 1st gear) at low speed even climbing up hill. But it needs skillful driving. However, with Auto gear mode, with all Turbo Lag and difficulties, my colleague Russel could go up to Bandarban town indeed and came back driving up hills and with difficulties but safely. He forgot to switch Manual gear mode during his struggle to uphill climb which could be overcome by manual gear drive. Later he provided info that with Manual Gear, itâs all fine to go uphill. So avoid auto gear mode while uphill and demanding driving conditions.
On 12th Dec 2019 we took it to Sajek with full 7 adult load with luggage of approx. 120 kg. It performed very good (See the video) After Sajek we took it further uphill following mud track and it kept climbing and went up with same loaded condition.
18. Cabin Noise/Comfort/Silence
Itâs a super calm car. Due to its noise isolation the idle noise is 38 decibel. More than 200 NVH points across entire car creates a quiet space in the cabin. The cabin noise on highway or asphalt road was so silent when I asked all of my colleagues inside car, how much the speed we were travelling was, none could say. They said 60-70. But the car odo was showing 95 km/h. That has impressed all of us. When I was driving at 120 km/h, it didnât feel like 120. Our road was not smooth though it was a highway, Iâm optimistic it will behave more smooth and calmer in a newly built road in BD, Say for example Dhaka â Mymensing or Chittagong Road. However, in Dhaka city Airport Road when we were travelling with 8 pax, the cabin silence was appreciated by junior colleague Samir and his family members. If anyone ask me, what is the most comforting aspects of this car, I will say, cabin silence. If you switch of AC, it produces almost no sound on smooth road even with a speed around 60-70 km/h. The engine produces low decibel and sound masking works great.
19. 0-100 km Test
It was a bad idea. It initially accelerate slower but later faster than normal when we pressed hard. Itâs never a sports car. It take the pick after 2.5k rpm/60+ km/h. By then many seconds got lost. We tried it in Dhaka Crescent Lake road and Sylhet-Tamabil highways but possibly we needed more free time. It took more than 16 seconds to reach 100 km/h. Time is lost in initial seconds. But this sudden acceleration should not be done frequently with a car having CVT, it may get damaged. This factor is hardly needed in practical life but I put this heading as in every car review, they mention it. 0-100 km test is just a mind comforting issue, we never do it in practical life.
But i Auto has overcome this by adding CVT5 with Torque Converter.
20. Safety and Stability:
Another important thing was ABS testing. I pressed real hard at 70 km/h and the car remained steady, on track, straight ahead. The ABS worked fine. But my colleague Ishtiaq complaint why the car didnât stop instantly. The reason was, thatâs how ABS works. If you want to stop instantly, possibly you will be out of road having a skid due to camber angle and steering geometry.
We didnât notice any body roll in sharp turn, though I didnât took an effort to do specific rapid movement to test the body roll. But in our highway drive, I never felt any roll. We could not test any long up-hill or down-hill performance. But one of my junior colleague Russel went from Satkania up to Bandarban and he complaint that it had issue during slow turns uphill when in auto gear. He did not activated hill climb assist button. But they went to Bandarban finally. Later he mentioned, that when it was driven manual gear, there was no issue up hill. I said, thatâs what they kept both option for. When u need more traction in demanding situation, drive with manual gear. The break hold button worked fine. Plz test all these by yourself and be satisfied.
The info provided in the review is subjected to be changed once modified info or findings gathered or received.
21. Off-Roading/Cross Country Capability
It may sound funny that I put a paragraph head âOff-Roading/Cross Country Capabilityâ while evaluating a 4x2 1500 cc car. As itâs a CUV having a 200mm ground clearance, I took it to demanding driving conditions few times. It performed satisfactory (See the videos) on sand, through hedges, over gravels etc. Only for one reason I disliked it, why the company didnât make it a 4x4 drive. In that case it would be a competitor of Xtrail in off-road ability aspects and possibly many Xtrail buyer would switch to DFSK as itâs an economic car.
22. Blind Zone Management
RVM does not block, Side Looking glass does not block. I had a big trouble with Vezel Z as I could not see the half left due to RVM possibly either it went too down or my heads are too high due to my height. I also had a big blind zone on my half right with both Xtrail and Vezel due to their wide roof footing/holding bar and wrong positioning of large side looking mirror. It was a disturbance in Xtrail. Please, evaluate this issue once u seat in any car while buying. In Dhaka or busy city road condition itâs extremely important.
23. Night Driving
I drove it at night in Dhaka City. The head lamp is OK for night driving situation. If I could take it absolute dark condition I would give you the best review on it. But due to incoming traffic lights, street lights I could not measure the effect of high beam. But then I put it against a wall, it was bright and angle of focus was ok. (See my Video) The tail light, indicator lights were bright and distinct from distance. It has even a door light for every doors which blinks when the door is opened. Itâs a good safety feature. I could not test the fog light under night situation as there were no fog.
