as a person with engineering background, i will say that using a thick oil will cause more harm than good.
If the engine is bad enough to be burning too much oil, then it is time for an overhaul, not using a more viscous oil.
A thick oil will among other things, have a lower flow rate when cold, which is when alot of the wear happens.
if the engine is used on the correct oil with a well maintained cooling system, pcv system and with timely oil changes. you can touch 300,000 km still running on recommended grade oil (and keep going). At this point the car will have pretty much completed it's life and an overhaul will be justified.
If there is minor reduction, it means it is time to top up the oil, not that the engine will explode, if you do not use a viscous oil.
Please also note that a more viscous oil will usually (not always though) be a lower api grade.
