Taglon is recommended by Toyota in newer engines.

i dont think there is any adverse affect in using 5w-50 viscosity. specially when mobil 1 is of same viscosity (popularly).

Indus must have put in some thought in coordination with toyota japan before opting taglon as a recommended oil.

Mobil1 is sold in almost all viscosities.

IMC are morons when recommending 5w50 oil in a econoricksha corolla.

In markets where they have to uphold warranty for 100000 kms or 5 years, toyota fill 0w20 and change at 6000 miles.

In other markets with 2 kms and ten minutes warranty, they might as well put heavy fuel oil in it.

2-3 reasons for recommending 5W-50 by Toyota could be

1- Bad quality fuel locally available
2- Since we Pakistanis think that Corolla and Civics are sports cars so we usually drive with heavier foot. 5w-50 oils are more protective as compared to lower viscosities when engines are pushed.
3- I dont know about States however in Pakistan long traffic jams are common and in that scenario higher viscosity oils are better at cooling the internals of the engine.

Cooling happens with flow of oil, thicker oil doesnt flow well.

Im saying that IMC are morons for advising a hot 20 cst oil in a dual vvt engine, when nearly all global markets are exclusively specifying and installing hot 7.0 cst oil.

at higher/highest operating temperature thicker oils flow and provide better engine cooling/protection.

as far as i have checked, recommended oil for latest Ford GT ecoboost turbo V6 is of 5w-50 viscosity. the reason for that is high revving sports machine.

similarly racing oils are sometimes 10W-60 that too coz, if you run the car continuesly at higher revs higher viscosity helps.

hope this clarifies since we pakistanis wanna push our 1.3 Litre GLI thinking it as a fastest car in the world. so IMC and Toyota must have thought about our mentality and driving, weather, environment and fuel conditions and decided for 5w-50 (which is not wrong considering all factors).

Everywhere other than Pakistan, no one is suggesting a 5w-50 for Corolla or even camry. They recommend 0w-20 and even our manual says 5w-30. Stop n go traffic is also present in other countries as well. IMC despite several emails could not clarify me the logic. I'm not sure if there is any proof its imported from Japan, Above all, has anyone noticed its ILSAC GF-3 ..taglon 5w-50 lol... I can show u toyota US car manual and it suggests using ILSAC-GF5.. there is a major disconnect for sure.

This is from US Corolla manual. ILSAC GF5. so taglon is also obselete as well , since usdm has same 2zr-fe engine

Toyota Japan has stakes in Indus Motor Company and Toyota Japan approves everything from lubricants to aftermarket spares.

They must have done some homework before launching 5w-50 Taglon blended by ExxonMobil.

Exactly. New Corollas in USA are even recommended 0W-16.

A relative of mine had oil reduction issues in his 2NZFE, so instead of rectifying the oil reduction issue he started pouring 20W-50 and now he cries about heat up and fuel consumption issue . Now that vehicle is heating up because of thicker oil, he filled the radiator with pure coolant (no mixing with distilled water), I cautioned him that it will result in build up of sludge and eventual blockages in cooling system but to no avail. I don't know why people don't follow the proper way to correct the issues and just use 20W-50 as a 'solution' for every problem.

Basically people don't understand machines and above all these jaahil mechanic ustaads have misguided people. Also people trust a mechanic ustaad with dirty clothes, gaaliyaan wali zubaan and beating his chota type more than an informed and educated response.

With due respect, sir you are talking on the base of assumptions while others are coming up with proofs. I am also a user of both, 1.6 and 1.8. Still i believe 5w-50 is too much for our condition. These are not sports machines. By the way a big fan of your's, the way you keep your cars. Peace and have a good day.
