Galant 2.5 V6 - 👍 or 👎?

I am considering buying a Galant 2.5 V6. Just wanted to know from any current owners about the car. Drive, parts availability, build quality, common issues, fair price, etc.

Walikum assalam, currently I own mitsubishi Galant 1.8 vx 2000 model and its just awesome! Its literally a beast, for v6 i would say go for it if you can afford it. Otherwise a big NO because of its average/km.

this problem in my gallant 2.5 vr, fan worked changed speed from low to high relay, fan module all checked but fan worked normally at both speed I mean not that fast like the local cars fans, faced some heating issues only during stops at traffic as soon as I move the needle would get normal, but when I direct them by just pulling the ECU wire out they run at full speed and no heating issue at all even if you are with AC on for 2 hours at full stop. So the issue is more air needed by engine. I spent many hours and hard earned money to increase the speed in auto mode but all in vein I can't be changed because that's how they designed the system, best option use direct in summer and auto in winter, no harms to engine in direct mode just the car will take 2 more minutes to reach optimal temperature.

I am the proud owner of v6 and it's an amazing machine. Parts are available but sometime you have to work little harder to get them. It's durable, fast, and most importantly very strong. You can't compare civic or corolla or accord. It's more like mark X level.

No clean pieces as yet. The ones I've found so far have had cracked leather, loose interior trim pieces and a lot of engine bay and suspension work pending. Mint condition ones are hard to find.

Also, due to older design the cabin space, roof height, rear leg/head room and overall interior design is not appealing or very practical for tall people.

The engine roars though!

I think you have not driven powerful V6 cars then.

the egg and potato mercedes M112 V6 engine is simpler than the mitsi V6 yet packs way more punch. Its numbers are not liked by modders because they dont know how to understand torque bands.

e.g. you need to flog the mitsi to move, the benz literally jumps from mid revs.

Other good V6 - Nissan VQ35, the original beastly V6, has a very satisfying drive.

The 1.8 GDI in the galant is nothing more than steaming garbage, it has HPFP failures, coking of the combustion chambers, injector calibration loss and in some cases the injector driver ECU just plain goes crazy - I spent quite some money on getting proper diag tools for it, just to find out that its a useless piece of trash in Pakistan.

I promptly swapped it out for a port injected engine. Never a problem again.

You know i was really trying to compare it with my ex c240 with the m112......the 112 is too damn smooth but being German oh well ,you know the valve oil leaks and what not.The mitsu being a Japanese i thought would be more reliable as a daily driver .I require reliability and cheap maintenance but again m112 parts are more easily available .I think this V6 on the mistubishi is quite an old engine

under my ownership the mercedes M112 never leaked oil, at most the breather caps leaked, but that takes like 1 hour to fix.

never will leak again, the valve cover gaskets are replacement item on all engines - they cook.

The galant has a 6A13 engine and the merc has a m112 both have almost same displacement the older m112 is 2400cc with around 160ish hp ,same goes for the galant not including torque figures .Now my question is availability of spares i.e new not scrapyard junk eg belt tensioners,idler pulleys,O2 sensors all these parts are available new for the benz are they available dabba pack for the mitsu????

Yes parts are available easily. But only genuine no china or Thai made that's the reason they are expensive. Periodic maintenance parts are easily available. If something not available There are many importers who can order parts within 10 days. I am using vr and didn't faced any problem with parts.

the quality of the mercedes benz engine and the mitsubishi engine is not comparable. The mercedes benz M112 engine is extremely long life and very very durable. The mitsubishi is a bit weak there and its clumsy gearbox makes it worse and will have valve seal failure (cheap parts)

the mercedes has more usable torque at midrange rpm due to its odd firing order (because its a 90 degree V6, which is naturally unbalanced) - the mitsu is a 60 degree V6 - smoother but gutless too compared to the mercedes.

But the best thing with the mercedes benz is the transmission and chassis - the complete drivetrain is amazing. The mitsubishi is a joke when compared.

one biggest problem you will notice is that the factory parts on a japanese car are not even sold at the dealer - they will always be a bit different, while german/american cars spares are the exact parts that were installed at the production line - meaning you can actually restore 100% performance of that system after a repair. (e.g. check the AFR sensors that toyota sell in their box compared to the one installed on the car at the factory)

if we go back in time - to brand new time of this galant v6 and this C240 mercedes - the price differential was not that much.

fast forward to today prices of spare parts of mitsubishi vs mercedes is only marginally different. - e.g. rebuilding the MB 5 spd auto and rebuilding the mitsu box is about the same in price.

Current price is almost the same both cars are available easily around 13lac ,mitsu being a little cheaper ,but i have gotten a total of 3 x galants checked and 2 had oil leakages and 1 had an engine swap with less than 200000km on the odo why?????? i am now banking towards the m112 dont know why they cut corners and made it a 90deg v6...but yes i couldnt agree more on your point about spares ...this m112/113 family is very wide spread in PAK and parts are available easily...coming to the gear box ,the MB gear box is quite sturdy and mitsu gearbox as per the internet forums is quite filmsy same is the case with the gearbox of an accord CL9

I must also add that Mercedes and BMW cars built between 1985-2005 are extremely robust. They could still out live any modern Japanese car.

The engines in these Mercs and Bimmers can retain up to 95% of its power with age and mileage. Japanese engines are notorious for losing 30-40% of their power over age and mileage.

To conclude neither the Germans nor the Japanese make cars as durable today as they did in this era......an era when engineers were not under the influence of accountants.

I do disagree with the part about not being able to get factory parts. You just need your chassis number/VIN and can easily get all available parts short of a complete engine assembly. Only problem is that these parts also have cross referenced part numbers with other vehicles that use the same parts or with slight modifications. Since prices of these parts vary from part number to part number people may sometimes use a Galant shock in lancer or sth like that. When you use cross referenced parts you always run the risk of getting sth that may not fit properly. If you stick to the original part numbers then you’re good to go.

However, the good thing about Germans is that they allow special crafting of parts of older vehicles that have been categorised as classics so you can restore even the oldest vehicles to original factory specs. With Japanese cars once the 20 year period passes you’ll not get this support.......but rarely does one keep a car for 20 years.
