why did no manufacturer ever recommend it in the service literature?

Don't know much, but at 50k kms throttle body becomes full of black soot and starts giving minor rpm fluctuations.
I cleaned whole intake system with liqui moly throttle and valve cleaner by pushing it into intake while mantaining 2k rpm.

It looks dirty, Lord help them if they see the tops of pistons or valve faces. Very soon ustaads will be tearing engines to clean and polish them, because todays cars have very light maintenance in their schedules so cabin and tree ustaads drummed this up and our naive car owners in Pakistan are in love with “original wali chamak/lashkara” so they fall for these so called “servicing”

I had an issue of lag in throttle response in my 2016 honda city. Finally I decided to consult an ustaad (first time in 6 years and 36k) he insisted on TB servicing and showed me the soot inside. Reluctantly I agreed. The issue is resolved by that. How do you explain that, was the root cause some other thing. If yes what is that. C9z as per manual there is no need of periodic servicing aka tunning

This is really funny.

Honda dbw actually have a self test on start and drive that sweeps the throttle to full open. It will throw an error code if the full sweep is not fully achieved due to jammed/dirty throttle to bore clearance.

Did your mechanic also remove the battery cables before removing the throttle unit?

Ok. But the slight delay in throttle issue was resolved after that, why is it so? Noos he didn't disconnect the battery. The cel came on which he reset with scanner. But he didn't recalibrate the idle rpm which I had to do at home

He didn't remove the throttle unit either. Removed the air box and carefully cleaned the TB venturi with carburettor cleaner. 2200 rs for a 7 min job

Resetting the ecu for codes clears the learned drivability which will clear the “laggy” throttle. Its actually a learned sequence if the car is driven in urban areas a lot.

And its a Honda city after all, its dbw has lag measured in geological time.

next time save your time and money and just pull the +ve/-ve battery cable for 5-10mins ...clean the terminals , coat with Vaseline or silicone grease and put back carefully with +ve 1st and -ve 2nd

any harsh cleaner used will actually kill your sensors so beware of that too

as explained above.. if you throttle is really that gummy and jamn. you throttle will never fully sweeps open..

the start DBW test everytime actually keeps it working and functional . just take care of your air cleaner and timely replace with genuine part to avoid mess in there at 1st place

what is the throttle body servicing ? please enlighten us with that.

It depends on the type of sensors used by the throttle body design: MAF or MAP/MAT, and within each one, precisely what variety of sensor.

While many manufacturers do not specify any servicing of these parts, just like oxygen sensors, these parts can slowly drift out of specifications or stop working completely, causing all sorts of difficult to diagnose issues with engines.

If a maintained engine is running fine with no CEL, it is usually a good policy not to bugger up the sensors without reason.

Hello folks, let me explain this tunnnnning thing... Normally Desi ustaads sup raaay thraaatle cleaner in throttle body and revving the engine to moon and back, unfortunately in hondas they're unable to rev it past 4k rpm but they supraaay it to clean it.

Now what actually happens is people in Pakistan don't obey maintenance schedule & they don't replace the air filters which results in air filters either bogging down the air flow in to the engine and in some cases it results in broken or damaged air filters which allow dust getting in to throttle body & throttle valve gets clogged on edges.

In hondas this restriction makes the response abit sluggish or jerky and usually throttle actuator or throttle body code appears. In Toyota the car never becomes jerky it becomes heavy on fuel slightly dropping the calculated economy on cluster and also in real...

Now this can be overcomed by the procedure.
1) remove the battery terminals
2) remove the throttle body
3) stuck the joiner or blocker in coolant passages so no coolant overflows from throttle lines.
4)use a good throttle valve cleaner, I prefer liquimoly throttle cleaner, or any basic contact cleaner can be used to clean the throttle valve.
5) reinstall the throttle body back
6) top up the coolant slightly
7) hook up a advanced obd2 scan tool, there is a special function known as throttle calibration. Follow the steps on scanner & you are done.
8)let the car warm up and see if the throttle is calibrated properly, improper throttle calibration or no throttle calibration in specifically honda, nissan, or any sensitive electric throttle system results in rpm getting stuck on 1200 and while you switch on lights or ac rpm jumps to 1200 or so. It should be below 1000 and should go up and down freely with the drop and push of throttle paddle.

This usually enhances the response of throttle actuator resulting in low foot easy peesy drive like it used to be earlier... Now the key is to install a genuine oem air filter so you don't need to do this procedure until atleast 40-60k km and always replace filter on time to prevent from this step.

Usually the idle gets effed by this much dirt inside.
And low foot drive gets affected.. High speed drive or flooring kind of driving technique usually have no problems even if throttle is dirty..

In Toyota, usually you don't require any calibration, once terminals are reinstalled back it automatically idles properly.

I've seen people not changing airfilters for decades... I've seen people complaining about noisy blower system inside & mostly we see cabin filters badly clogged or sometimes Desi ustaads have removed it.

And one more common problems appears in cars above 100k mark, the fuel quality here is really poor, so always get the fuel filters replaced after 100-120k km. And if you have bought any car used always get all filters, plugs, throttle inspected... And if the throttle is clean then don't get butchered by Desi ustaads of again and again throttle cleaning...

The before picture showing the front of the throttle proves that there was no air filter installed at all.

In this condition forget the throttle, the engine is probably toast with all that dust grinding away the cylinders.

Use petromin 5w30 fully synthetic it's available on daraz it's cheaper as compared to total caltex etc I have used it. It performs the same as any other synthetic brand .It was out of stock last time so I went for caltex .I will be using it again next time IA. Be sure to use genuine oil filter from authorized outlet
