I have a story to share as well, and its a common one, engine oil. It was in 2017.
Prius Gen 3. I took for the first oil change after checking the color on dipstick. Its my fault that I did not know the correct oil grade for the car. I went to a car wash/service station near home in Lahore, and saw bottles of 10w40 and 20w50 oils. Then I realized ke oil grade bhi kuch hota hai, the guy came to me and said 10w40 dale ga fully synthetic. By that time the other person had drained the oil from the car.
I quickly checked on my phone about oil grades and ones suitable for Prius gen 3, and my search took me to prius chat, and the conclusion was it needs 0W20. I told the guy and showed him the manual pdf, and the reply was the common this is not for the heat of Pakistan. The car couldn't be moved so I called a trusted mechanic who told me not to get oil from random shops and then I called my brother to get 0w20, and get 5w20 if not available. The manual says to use 0w20 in every climate/temperature etc etc, and use 5w20 if 0w20 is not available.
There was also that second voice in my head constantly saying "yar kuch ho na jaye, 0w20 is very thin etc etc."
By the time my brother reached I got a long lecture on garmi of Pakistan and thick oil and he showed me receipts of other customers using 10W40 in Prius. I am not able to believe that many countries have higher temperatures than Lahore, and many parts of USA are very hot too, yet same oil is recommended, but why we always get the climate argument garmi bohot hai etc.
Used 5w20 in Prius for 2 years because 0w20 was not easily available and also because of the other voice in my head, the fear of something going wrong. Switched to 0w20 since last winter, and so far, some 42000kms and 3.5 years later nothing wrong with the car, no oil reduction or leakage. I switched the oil to 0w20 for the first time in winter despite knowing that the car heats up to an operating temperature which is higher than any summer/winter temperature, so changing it when weather is cold makes no difference but that second voice ...... kuch ho na jaye sometimes overcomes the common sense.
And, on tires (Cultus), the plate on the door says 35psi, the tires have 36psi written on them, but whenever I ask to fill to that pressure, I get the "yahan bohot garmi hai" reply despite the plate being in both English and Urdu, clearly meant for Pakistan.
