Honda Experts: Help needed about Jerk in my Prosmatec in Drive mode

Dear All,

I am facing a wierd problem in my 2005 Honda VTi Prosmatec. I recently replaced a CV Joint in my car. As you know its fixed on the axle which is inserted into the transmission.

The mechanic just took out the whole axle out of transmission and changed the CV joint. Ever since that day my car JERKS in the morning when the engine is cold while changing gears and ESPECIALLY when i put it first on the D (Drive Mode).

N.B. The jerk is felt when i move the stick all the way from P to R and then N. The moment i change it from N to D and my foot is on the break, the car Jerks. The jerk is like substantive Jump that if the engine has been Unmounted.

I have check all the things including transmission oil, gear mount, engine mounts etc. There no light indication inside of any sort!!!.

****** Please note that it only happens when the engine is COLD and moment i drive it for a while like 1 Km or for 5 mins. It gets normal....*******

Wondering whats the problem.. I have taken it twice to mechanic but no avail. Is it something normal, which i have to face after changing the axle or do i have to take to another mechanic for a detailed inspection.

when cold the engine idles at about 1500 revs - shifting to D will cause a jerk its not anything out of the ordinary. You are not hearing a clunk are you?

Thanks xulfiqar, no it's not like clunk noise. It's definitely a jerk, like if the engine take a slight jump and something brings it down. The is no metal sound in that noise/jerk at all.

If it's ordinary than why it ha started after the change of CV joint when he took the axle out of the tranny. I didn't notice this before. Although, I have just recently bought this car and new to auto trannys so there is a slight probably there may be a faint jerk before that which may have gone un noticed.
And now when it has gone amplified, I'm feeling this more..

Also, one more thing. Has it anything to do with the race pedal cable. The mechanic said that it's a little jam to and not fixing properly in the outer loop.
Wondering, if this causing all this. He also fiddled with that the other day!!???

If the jerk is amplified than normal, then one of the engine mounts has torn itself, The throttle cable leads to the throttle only as you must be having a prosmatec transmission, which gets its load signals from the TPS and MAP sensors. Is your car on CNG? I know it sounds a little stupid, but sometimes the most remote items mess up without cause.

The first thing that comes to my mind (from my experience in the past) is that the nut for the hub is loose and it lets the hub slip on the axle. See picture below:

It's just my assumption that it might have existed before and not got amplified but I dont have evidence of this. since it only comes at a cold engine, so its unlikely the mount thingy but I will get the mounts checked tomorrow morning and let you know. And yes my car does have a CNG but given it's unavailability in major time of the week I only use it as an accessory. Once again, thanks for your time.

Thanks. Yes the same thing came to my mind too and I got this checked already. The nut is perfect screwed in and fully tight. Again, I would reiterate that it's a jerk on cold engine and vanishes, the moment it's driven a mile or so. Weird problem indeed

Input from others will be highly regarded... Anybody aware of this issue. I have done some googling And found that a lot of people have faced this problem in other cars too but couldnt get a conclusive answer.!!!

u shud consult a 3s honda dealership.
they hav better knowledge abt these cars.
roaming to local mechanics will just ruin ur tym.
i had a similar prblm in my CITY 2001 EXi automatic.
prblm was resolved by the honda experts.

That's what I'm ultimately aiming to do now. The reason I circulated it first on the Internet is to get more knowledge on the issue before approaching any mechanic.

its only probably an adjustment of the TPS, most CNG installations fiddle with the throttle stop screw, it causes the throttle sensor not to read "idle" when closed.

I think that thats probably the case.. I'll take it to the dealers and get the TPS adjusted or otherwise...
I showed to another mechanic from our office authorized work shop, the guy is quite good and looks after our fleet of our official Land Cruisers. He said that the symptoms you are describing are of a car with low levels or bad quality of transmission oil but the oil in my car was recently change and i used the original (most expensive) ATF oil from Honda and the level was ok too.

Anyway, i'll take to Honda this weekend when head back to Lahore... I'll keep you posted in any case...

bro, check out the level of Automatic transmission fluid. Your problem indicates that it might be due to low level of ATF. As u have said that the axle was removed from the transmission it is likely that some of the ATF might have leaked out. Make sure that u use or have used the type of ATF specified by HONDA. The engine mountings have got nothing to do with such sort jerks.

Thanks, i have already checked that. The transmission fluid is OK both in quality and level wise. It was recently changed and i used the original ATF from Honda.

I have only done 700 km after the change. Wondering, if this is dude to bad quailty or fake one given to me by honda???

Also, a recent thing which happened this morning was that when i drove, it wasnt changing gear and stuck at one gear only. After which i turned the engine off numerous times and restarted the car but the problem persist. Then, it took one of the terminal off the battery and it resumed to normal.

Dont know whats happening to my car. It was perfect untill they dismentalled the axle and changed the CV joint!!!!!!

Guys, I took the car to Honda and they said that the tranny oil is slightly less. Which was toped up but still the problem persisted this morning. When I started, the same jerk issue but one improvement which I noticed was that it took less time to vanish unlike before when it use to take driving a few km to get rid of that.

I will take it to honda on Monday again and see what they come up now.

I was thinking whether draining the oil would help in some way or not. Maybe it has some dust particles in it which are causing this but it only happens in the morning.
Is there a transmission filter in these Hondas??? If yes, does it require changing??

yes there is a filter but the design is so stupid that the entire transmission needs to taken apart to replace it. This is a classic Honda trait - I wonder why they do it. B@stards

sir the same problem is with me in my vitz.
it happens when the engine is cold but continues at times.

and i have some axel problem in my car too. that is the front left .

Little relieved that I'm not alone
By the way, did you get that inspected?? What does your mechanic says.
From the looks of it, my axle issue has been fixed but a new jerky tranny has emerged.

What can be the cause if it?? Is it some sensor playing up or the gear malfunction??

Also, today Honda told me that the gear needs to be open to find the fault.. Any advice.

seems like a sticking piston or modulator in the valve body, It may also be a plugged filter at the solenoids. Best would be to have the trans taken apart and the items in question inspected and the main filter replaced when packing it back up.
