Horsepower or CC?

why in Pakistan do we use CC (engine capacity) to measure it's power? whereas worldwide horsepower is used to define the engine strength?

coz the law charges its taxes in cc and you get to know how much fuel it will eat

well it depends on the situation basically, CC is used for taxes and those sorts of purposes and also because the "layman" in Pakiland dosent know what horsepower actually is :), unless otherwise everywhere else we use horspeower, well atleast i do (where applicable)

i guess pakistanis have started using term Bhp ...

If u will Says a car is 2000 cc to someone ... next person will say how much bhp will it produce ...

i guess most of the people are familiar ... And cc is counted to see the engine capacity ...

And bhp is the power ...

actually a true test of an engines power is the torque....

Hello Guys

Engine power is generally termed in figure of HP value, but it is DIRECTLY related to CC. There are many other factors like compression ratio, spark technology, induction etc. For example, just take a formula 1 engine, it is 2400 CC nowadays (same capacity as Honda Accord) but it produces more than 750 HP!! As Storm mentioned, technically Torque curve of the engine also determines how much acceleration you will get on a particular category car. Another misnomer here is that ppl dont associate HP of car with the weight category. FOr example, a light weight car with 1000 CC engine might have a better performance than a 1300 CC car with more weight and different aerodynamics(Generally speaking)

Like i think pakistani ppl think that if the car is 600 cc its not fast and when they hear that another car is 2000 cc they just understands that there is alot power under its hud.

But actually pakistani ppl are "paindu" and they don't lknow ahts horsepower or BHP.

almosty 80% of pakistanis r illetrate,they hardly know how many cc is their car and they wodnt care less how many hp is it,all they want is good milage

In Pakistan CC is used by people to judge the fuel consupmtion...

HP doesnt matter in normal cars... all cars in e.g 1000CC have same HP...

1.mehran
2.alto 1000cc
3.alto 660cc
4.cultus
5.corolla 1300(old shape)
6.corolla 1300.new
7.corolla 1.8L
8.civic 1.8L
9.city 1.5L

BTW in the old days, cc was more in use than hp.

we dont even know the hp of our cars...the basic factor is that even on our registeration papers..they only write CC..not HP..
so only a man knowing the car knows about its hp..

CC Cubic Centimeter,
1000 CC=1 lit
if a car is 1.8 lit=1800 CC
this is actually the capacity of engine. it is infact engine cylender volume in other words how much air and fuel it can in take in cumsbustion chamber. This CC is rounded upto nearest tenth for example 970 CC engine will be rated as 1000 CC. HP is horse power which is mechanical power of engine. yes Govt goes by the capacity not the power.

As I said earlier, same cc category engine does NOT mean generally same horsepower...I will givce example of cultus,vitz,Joy and Santro.

Cultus=52-55 BHP (Figure varies, from different sources)
Santro= About 56 BHP
Vitz=68-69 BHP
Joy=62 BHP

So you can clearly see the difference, even though all engines have same cc value
