After some time pass with Zulfi bhai -with apologies, now back to topic.
I couldn't condone his personal attacks directed at a pakwheel forum member so thought to play around a bit, but keeping my standards to not make any personal attack on him! alhamdulilah. What we say to others reflects our mind, like our elders say "jo dosro ko kehta hay vo khudi hota hay"... so all that we say to others are our own figment of imagination.. our reflection and shadows... one is venting out his own little thoughts..
Topic: Off-Roading: I believe this can be further discussed, there seems to be "off-roaders" who are getting offended with cars like Hyundai Tuscon or Kia Sportage -All Wheel Drive. Hence, a deeper look at how off-roading is defined and what qualifies as "off roader".
What's Off roading: Off-roading is the activity of driving or riding a vehicle on unsurfaced roads or tracks, made of materials such as sand, gravel, riverbeds, mud, snow, rocks, and other natural terrain. Types of off-roading range in intensity, from leisure drives with unmodified vehicles to competitions with customized vehicles and professional drivers. [wiki]
What's the difference between AWD, 4x4 and 4WD
AWD: All-wheel drive describes vehicles that have a four-wheel drive system designed to maximize road traction.
4WD:Four-wheel drive is used as a description of vehicles that are more inclined to be used for actual off-roading. Many, but not all, 4WD vehicles have a center differential that helps divide the power and torque between the front and rear axle.
Serious off-roaders will usually have high and low-range gearing.
It's true that adventurers and off-roaders opt for 4WD, there are technical details and features on how this works.
Hyundai /Kia AWD: These are designed as normal every day family cars with all wheel drive capability, these give advantage when we go to northern areas of Pakistan where there are slippery uphill ascends and normal 2WD has to put extra effort to climb with slipping and speedy wheels..
Comparison with 2WD: As i mentioned earlier, my context is around Corolla & Civic, these cars slip when going up hill on slippery road, i had difficulty going from Astore to Rama on my 2WD, I made it to the top but with AWD it would be easier- i hope.
Going from Kalam to Maodhand or from Mastuj to Shandoor /phandar.. I think AWD will do the job... while a 2WD gets stuck when one wheel loses traction, here AWD will make easy to go slow and easy in slippery off-road 'roads' like from naran to saif-ul-malook... needs all wheel traction to clear few areas.
Off roading: Travelling on off-road terrains require vehicles capable of accommodating off-road driving such as ATVs. These vehicles accommodate off-road conditions with extended ground clearance, off-road tires and drive-train. Some manufacturers offer vehicles specifically meant for off-road use.
Prado or Landcruiser would fail in Jhal Magsi or Cholistan Rally Race, people modify their jeeps extensively or have different category for "stock car".
Normal city people with families can enjoy advantage of intelligent all wheel drive systems that not only give extra safety but ease of drive on 'off road conditions' like in northern areas of Pakistan.
_humble request: please stay on topic and avoid personal attacks, abuse or arrogant comments to display personal superiority through close relatives or direct acquaintances, there are commoners like me here too! _
