I would sincerely advise you to stay as far away from Sportage as possible. This is one of the worst machines ever built! Extremely underpowered right out of the factory and has a terrible resale. This is something that I would not take even if it was free. Rest is upto u. Nothing more reliable than Toyota Cruisers, RKR, Hilux etc.

After doing some more research, I have to admit I was wrong. But, the good news is you have a Toyota 2.2L engine out of a Camry. It's a 5S-FE.

I went to an electrician in Sultan-ka-Khuh (in Pindi) yesterday to have the engine rewired. He charged me 5,500. During the operation he exposed the ECU which had 3S-FE written on it.

On that basis am I then right in assuming that the engine is 3S-FE. Is it possible that mechanics use a 3S ECU with a 5S engine.

Also are there any distinguishing marks on the 3S engine or the 5S which will confirm its identity concretely.

The power/acceleration of the Sportage with this engine leads me to believe it is 2 litres and not 2.2 liters.

I have already purchased it. I cannot afford a Land Cruiser or a Hilux etc.

I appreciate the points that you have raised. I did give these due consideration at the time of taking a decision. Let me share these with you.

I did not buy it to resell since I do not have that luxury. The flip side of this is that the initial cost is lower which is right what I want. So case closed.

The engine has been changed to petrol (3S-FE). This opens up the possibility of using CNG. This is important because I have to commute from Taxila to Isb for work and as such using diesel (or motor gasoline) is expensive.

My driving habits do not demand high power. I can live with low/medium accelerations. I don't have to travel to hills or mountains or go offroading where power is definitely required.

Reliability in a motor vehicle comes from getting all the operating parts functioning as per specifications and not crossing various limits such as high temp, lubrication, physical shocks etc. I think I can remain within normal operating parameters on all such counts which will ensure that the Sportage remains "reliable".

This is what a 3S-FE looks like

and this is what a 5S-FE looks like

So my bet it is, the previous owner installed this 5S-FE and could not find the correct ecu for it, so in order to get the car running, installed a 3S ecu to it. If you use incorrect ecu, your engine will never perform to it's maximum capabilities. A 3S ecu will run this engine like a 3S. You would need a 5S-FE ecu to squeeze the maximum output from this motor.

First my sincerest thanks for taking the trouble to post these pictures of the 3 and 5S engines.

I have attached two pics below to take the discussion forward. Now if you look at the cylinder head in two pictures you will note that the squarish front left corner of my engine's cylinder head is exactly like the 5S engine in the picture you have very graciously provided. These have been circled A in both the pictures. However if you look at B in both pictures which are the throttle butterfly valves you will note the difference. In my engine the butterfly valve is located close to the radiator, i.e towards the front of the engine whereas in your picture of the 5S, the throttle is located at the back side (towards the flywheel). I don't fully comprehend this difference. Moreover the picture of the 3S that you have provided, shows the throttle butterfly valve towards the front of the of the engine, just like it is placed in my Kia's engine.

Is it possible that my Kia's engine is a bastardized version, where the 5S cylinder head has been placed on a 3S engine block and a 3S ECU is managing the engine or vice versa.

Would appreciate your views on these points.

Hi all,

Is it possible that my KIA engine is an 5SFE with a 3SFE manifold.

Since a 3SFE ECU is installed in my Sportage, can someone comment on the negative aspects of using a 3S ECU with a 5S engine.

Also where can I buy/swap the 3S ECU with a 5S, in Pindi/Isb. What is the exchange likely to cost?

Mere pas grand sportage 2002 2.5 years se he. Is me toyota hilux surf ka engine he (Hilux Surf SSR 1994 model) it is 113 hp engine. But jab mene gari li thi to us me computer GLI ka fit tha and gari patrol pe boht bakwas chalti thi. Gas pe guzara tha but consumption ziada thi.

Then It took me around 1 year to fix the whole car, I got the manual from toyota japan for the car, done some electronics work like Oxygen sensor, TPS sensor, IAT sensor, MAF etc. Oxygen sensor k liye sinlensor me alteration krni pari, and IAT k liye air-cleaner me alteration ki he, done wiring of sensors, get orignial ECU of the Hilux Surf. Get the denso irridium plugs of correct heat range. Manual me se plug correct gap dekh kr adjust kia. Ignitor re-wire kia. Ab gari k computer me koi scan code nahi he. Fuel pump landcruiser ka dala he aur us k liye tank me tori alteration ki he and injectors replace kiye hn with toyotas new one.

Aur ab mashALLAH Gas pe mileage 5 Rs/Km he and Patrol 9/10 /L he in the city. Mene gari me multan tak travel kia he with 1 hour stop in Lahore. Hilux surf ka engine he and it is rock solid. Summer me AC pe kuch heat ka masla he(in City only), now I am considering to change the radiator. Murree and Kashmir travel kia he in snow and the engine pulls the car like a monster. Overall sportage is very good deal provided its price. Sportage ko load condition me CNG pe mat chalaen to koi kam nahi nikale gi. Is ki suspension ko ap car se compare nahi kr sakte, islye kam bhi kam nikalti he.

Surf me aur is me fark running cost ka he, agar kia sportage me alteration achi ho jai to SURF ise catch nahi kr sakti, more power and less fuel consumption. Surf luxurious jeep he aur is hawale se SURF ka Sportage se koi comparison nahi he. lekin SURF 20 Lack ki he and Sportage 9 Lack ki, You wont mind taking it to Saif-ul-Malook

Simply no doubt it looks beautiful and I have no idea about its flexibility. Mostly I traveled in hilly areas so the point is either it will be affordable or not in hilly areas or off roads? What will be its price in diesel manual transmission?

dear i bought it with toyota s3 engine. and extremly satified with its performance ... no issues at all...approx 12 to 15 per ltr petrol and 130 to 145 per cylinder cng of 60 kgs...avg at highways

I have mounted Toyota petrol engine with this configuration (3y-EU head on 4y block), the alteration I have done is long story. It is converted to 7-Seater and can seat big family easily. I am getting good fuel average 10 Km/L. The vehicle top speed easily goes to 140-150 Km on motorway with AC. Mounted special Rims and wide tires for extra grip.

The vehicle is tested many times to Kalam, Malam Jabba, Astore, Neelum (Aren Kel, Kutton), Gilgit, Skardu and Quetta. Though I had bad experience once, the coil burnt out during our way to Multan but as Toyota parts are easily available we get it fixed with Kabuli one.

If this vehicles alteration goes well, this is very good family car in just around 10 lac budget and not very expensive to keep.

My question for you. Is the aircon/heating in your Sportage working OK. In my Sportage it is not very effective despite the fact that the engine is a Toyota 3S. I have been repeatedly told by mechanics that this is an issue with Sportage aircons, due to a low capacity fan.

Kindly help and advise what to do. I have been thinking about replacing the front panel with a better aircon/fan. Is this replacement a viable option or just my wishful thinking.

Other advice/input from experienced Pakwheelers is welcome.TIA.

Airconditioning. The only viable solution would be to install a bigger compressor and a bigger blower unit. This would be quite an expensive proposition though. It can be done and we resolved this issue in a Mehran back in the day by installing a Corolla This is a problem with cars without dual blower assembly in it.

What about the space issue. How did you get over that in the Mehran.

I am not sure what a dual blower assembly is. Could you be so kind to elaborate.

The immediate solution that comes to my mind is to raise the input voltage to the blower to speed it up, thus increasing pressure and consequently the air flow. Is that a viable option? Has anyone tried it before?

Mehran had enough space to accommodate the bigger blower. It will have to be seen which blower can be installed in Sportage.

Dual blower might not be possible but a blower installed in the ceiling could be possible. One of the Chinese vans launched in Pakistan (FAW or Changan) has that from factory.
