Could you give me a reference?
And of course, we'd have to make sure whatever add pack is left over actually is negligible, rather than assuming the oil's being replaced after an OCI, rather than being topped up for whatever reason, e.g. leaks.
I've had to replenish pretty new GL-4 because of a seal leaking, and this disclaimer isn't just a CYA because the self-certification is done with oil companies' characteristic testing procedures, as was the datasheet disclosure. Just in case you end up with the fringe case of having metallurgy that reacts negatively to the zinc-based add pack compared to the sulfur-phosphorus -- the whole point being that if the manufacturer recommends 15W-40 motor oil in your transmission, then that's what they've validated it with.
Chevron doesn't sell their GL-4 here for consumer retail, to my knowledge.
There are transmission shops perfectly willing to put GL-5 in a transmission and this very MTF in a hypoid gear drive and not even mention what they've done, probably because they don't or can't read. Especially if we take their saying about the cause of gearbox noise being a fluid replacement into consideration.
