AoA, Everyone I recently bought a Civic 99 VTI Oriel with engine swapped (block) D16y the mechanic says the engine is in good condition, I need some guidance regarding oil mechanic is recommending that i use 20W-50 but I’ve got some friends who are recommending me to use 10W-40 but i am bit afraid if i use 10W-40 it might start giving smoke because i dont know the history of this car.

I was also confused between Mobil, LM & Shell, I was very close to choosing Mobil TAP but only thing that pulled me back was they're entirely not diesel specific engine oils. I went with Amsoil 5W30 Diesel Max since it was the only oil available with similar ratings and being a diesel specific synthetic engine oil.

API diesel spec oils newer oils are not usually better in engine protection. They are focused more on compatibility with cat converters, DPF, urea injection etc. Luckily our GD engines have nothing of that sort installed. The best suited oils for these engines for best protection are older oils and API CF is the best along with ACEA A3/B4. Toyota is not stupid. They are smart enough to have engineered these engines and know best.

If the engine is not burning oil than you can switch back to 10w40 no problem. Just keep spare oil incase the level starts to decrease.

Brother almost all oil companies have or are shifting from API CF so why opt for something that is outdated? Second there is CAT convertor in Fortuner.

Not of cheaper quality, but again not overkill as well

There are two variants of Shell HX7 5w30, one is (high mileage api sn) and another fully synthetic (plus api sp)

Also there's havoline pro ds 5w30

Currently I'm using havoline 10w30 in cultus and 5w30 in civic

Go with PSO Carient S-PRO. It's fully synthetic with API SP and dexos1 spec.

Not really fond of PSO products. Whenever I used there petrol, I faced low average or missing/pick loss.
But never tried their lubes, I will look into it. Thanks for sharing

I have never faced any issue with PSO fuel. It all depends on from which filling station you fill from.
If the owner of the pump is fraud, then nothing could be done. It's better to stick with company operated pumps.

Major lube makers and automobile companies are generally all a safe bet.

Toyota
Shell (only full synthetic 5w30)
Havoline

These are all safe and in normal price range.

Top of the line is Mobil but unnecessarily expensive, don’t need it when cheaper options are available from the likes of Havoline, Toyota, shell or even Honda (tin pick from Japan) and Total.

I know some folks are suggesting PSO which is likely a rebrand of some acceptable international oil but I generally have trouble fully trusting PSO and exactly what oil blend they’re using.

Personally I’d only buy PSO if it was half the price of Havoline/Toyota/Shell oils.

I need your help members. I've got passo X 2011 with a mileage of 1 lakh plus. I was using 5w-30w and shifted to havoline 20w-50w and mechanic suggested to change oil at every 3000 km. I am quite surprised that the oil changes so frequently at 3000. Is my engine burning oil? When do you guys change oil? At what mileage?

It's not a rebranding. They are blending here in Pakistan in a huge plant. This video is kind of an advert by PSO, but you will get the idea how huge their investment is.

Yes exactly. I was using liquimoly in civic when it used to cost around 9-10k for 4litre. Now its around 20k.

So shell 5w30 hx7 plus looks like a deal at around 8.5k.

You should be more surprised of the reason your mechanic asked you to put 20w50 (or if you did it yourself)

Was it there any reduction in engine oil on dipstick or blue smoke from the tailpipe?

Just not a brand of oil I’d put in my engine. Unless it was exactly half the price of major lube makers like I said.

It’s not 1990s anymore..

First sign you should change your mechanic. Though most of them are this much clueless.

Stick to 0w20 (ideal for Vitz as per its manual) or max 5w30.

No matter how many lakhs it has run.

this is a never ending ask - bhai mechanic ustaad ne farmaya 2 lak baad to grease daltay hain hum!

and you lose brain cells by hearing that - literally oxygen is wasted. With the information of the world in ones palm, we are still stuck in 1950s bicycle mechanic mindset.

The Toyota dealers here are even recommending it. They switch from 5w30 to 10w40 to 20w50 within 150k.
