Lubricant Discussion- Engine Oil / Gear Oil

Just read that low HTHS values cause increased engine wear. I am using idemitsu 5w30 sp (Honda latest at dealership) with 2.97 HTHS cP..

Previous oil had (idemitsu SN) 3.14 cP value.
So should I be concerned? or this oil will keep on protecting an old engine? (R18).

With previous oil (5w30 SN by idemitsu) the engine was butter smooth but this time (SP) the engine sound is slightly higher @ cold start.

I'm quite sure Honda specced 5W-20 for the R18A with a 10,000km oil change interval, which necessarily means a low HTHS around 2.6. This is a simple engine, and I've run mine 195,000km on plain jane 5W-30. It's not uncommon to see these engines with 300k+ on them.

ACEA A3/B4 calls for HTHS > 3.5, so if it gives you peace of mind (as it would to me) you can switch to an oil that has that certification, but clearly Honda didn't think it necessary. Helix HX7 Plus is rated ACEA A3/B4 and is probably the cheapest available for 4 liters.

Not an issue as it’s close to 3, which is good enough. It’s not like you’re using a 2.1 HTHS oil.

Unless you have German performance cars and drive on the autobahn with no speed limits. If driving style is normal then even now HTHS is adequate.

Higher HTHS also means less fuel economy.

So I will continue using this.. Actually the oil-change-mechanic also told me they are trying to get this oil nearer to --w20 in terms of performance, which I thought is good...
But was just thinking, obviously they would add anti-wear additives in the oil..

As-salam alaikum I have a Toyota Corolla GLI 1.3 from 2018, and since the very beginning, I have been using 10W-40 oil because I didn't have much knowledge, and it was recommended by some mechanic. However, I have now realized that this was a mistake because 10W-40 oil should be used for cars with over 100,000 kilometers mileage, whereas my Corolla has mileage only around 45,000 kilometers. I don't have knowledge about a good engine oil for my car and have turned to this forum to find an answer.

I have a 2010 GLI which has done 300,000 KM, which oil grade should i put in my car?
I've been reading 5w30, but considering my engine has been driven 300k km, would it be a good choice?

Right now, i'm using Kix 20w50.

Toyota recommends 0w20 or 5w30. Thicker oils are only used when the car starts burning oil on a lighter oil. If your car is well maintained then you can switch to 0w20 without any problems.

I would not recommend 5w30 on an engine with high km's and on thicker oil. You can switch to 5w40 or 10w40 and run that till the engine dies. If your engine is well maintained than you should see small amounts of oil being burned but you can top it off till it stops. I would recommend synthetic but mineral is fine.

Which brand would you recommend? I have used Zic before but it has no 5w30

Experienced members can guide better but 5w30 is available at Total, Shell, and Honda/Toyota dealerships. If you want cheap oil total is good and shell too.... The dealership stuff is better.

Zic have 0W-30. You can safely use 0W-30 where 5W-30 is recommended.

If your vehicle's owner's manual says 0W-20 is allowed, then yes, you can use 5W-20. You can safely change the first number with W.

The number behind the W usually doesn't matter in warm climates. In colder climates like northern areas or during winters in Punjab, that's when 0w20 would be chosen instead of 5w30 because 0w20 at lets say 5°C flows better than 5w20 at the same temperature other than that there is no difference.

Using 0W-* oils have an impact on fuel economy and acceleration even in warm temperatures if you use it in hybrids or in petrol only vehicles that are used for short trips.

If it's maintained well than 5w20 is fine.
