Hi Pakwheels community. This is my first post here. I have a Honda City 2017, Mileage is 105000 (one lac 5 thousand) km. I had been changing its engine oil with Shell Helix 5w30. Recently the oil changing guy in Shell guided me to use Shell Helix 5w40 so I bought the 4 litre can. He said it'll run 10k Km before changing. It's also slightly expensive (2000rs). I'm wondering if it really runs to around 10k Km or was he just making it up. Because normally I change oil after 5k KM.

5w-30 is good enough

5w-40 is better . My advice would be yo change at 7500 to see the condition

Hi. I have a Honda City Manual Transmission 2017. It has now exceeded the 1 lac KM running and I want to change its gear oil. Which oil should be the best for it and how much litres do I need? Where to buy genuine oil in Islamabad (F sector). I can go to Honda but they won't give me the gear oil without asking their mechanics for replacement and they cost a lot. So I want to buy myself and get it changed from my own mechanic. Any leads please. Thanks

Its a myth that says use 'mota' oil after 50k or 100k kms. Maybe was true in 70s or 80s for old engines.

My civic x 90k kms driven use 0w20 havoline and I run it for 9k kms before oil change.
Doesnt reduces a drop winter or summer.

They are just sales men and they are doing whatever they are told to do to sell the oil bottles. As a fun, next time you meet him then ask couple of simple questions like what minimum rated API oil i can use in my car ?

The recommended motor oil for 2017 City is 5w-30 or alternatively 10w-30
Just stick to these oils only.

Secondly, there are too many options available in the market as compared the contents, grades, certifications, classifications, etc. and it literally confuses everyone to choose the right type of oil. Because if 5w-30 is fully synthetic, then its life is longer than other 5w-30 who are either partially synthetic or semi synthetic.

I remember like 15 years ago when I read a motor oil broacher of liqui moly and at that time they had 5 types of 5w-30 oils. One regular usage, one premium, one partially synthetic, one fully synthetic, etc. And I was like how difficult its for someone to choose the right oil !!!!

Use 5w30 or 0w20. Don’t go thicker than this.

Easily run it for 7 to 8000 km.. 5k km is too short interval.

Thanks for the detailed response. I cannot return the 5w40 now. Can I use it ? Next time can I switch to 5w30 after using 5w40?

Since you cannot return the bottle which you’ve already bought, so you have no other option except to use it.

So you may use 5w-40 for now and can switch back to 5w-30. Absolutely no harm for engine. But please do not run this 5w-40 upto 10K km in your car (as suggested by pump guy). Change it earlier.

Generally speaking any good 5w30 SN grade fully synthetic would do. Hondas own oil and PSO oils are good and cost effective. Get them changed from authorised sellers only, and use Honda genuine filter.

Whenever we buy vehicle either new or slightly used, the first thing comes in mind that we should feed expensive oils to get the best performance. But it seldom works.

Check the manual. 5w-30 is the recommended motor oil for your vehicle by OEM.

If you want to keep long change intervals, then go for fully synthetic oils. Otherwise common 5w-30 with synthetic formula or partially synthetic would be good.

And don’t forget to check the ATF also. If its color is red then you can still run it few more thousand kilometers. But if its black and has burnt smell, then better change it now too.
