Maintaining UPS/car batteries

Currently using Mercury 24v inverter with a pair of Phoenix UGS 175.
Inverter has fixed charging rate of 10 amp.

Thinking to get UGS 215 pair next time but also want to increase charging speed to 15 amp at least.

Most inverters in market has charging rate of 20 amp or higher.

Will 20 amp charge rate do for UGS 215 or is it too much??

Find the one which charges 20 amps and has trickle charging system. That way it will detect the battery charge and decrease as battery needs less. Otherwise if only 20 amps all the way from 0-100% charge. It will only damage the battery and its health.

For instance. I get 6-8 hour backup from AGS 175. Hope u get more from 215. Otherwise your inverter or ups sucks. But. Good luck.

Batteries don't need branded water. All they need is distillied but clean n pure. Air conditioner water is distilled but full of carbon impurities.

Find any localAGS shop and purchase from there. I get 1 liter for 70 rs. Expensive.

Or go to battery repair people there are many shops doing just battery business. And buy from there. All u have to ask and care is whether the distilled water is pure clean and cheap.

My UPS doesn't suck and have been serving nicely since last 7 years.

But my batteries have grown much bigger in size over the years and i thought if i go bigger again it might be the time to upgrade the inverter as well.

May be i will just get something in Hybrid Solar Inverter and be done with it.

Also is Phoenix UGS215 good option or am i better off with AGS at given price point?

I would buy AGS again as experienced good results on bike and UPS. And also recommended by my friend Abid.
But i cannot suggest u in any different way unless i have compared Phoenix. But a hearsay they are good these days .

Now I bought the battery in Jan and from last week it's done for holds power for 45 mins and then starts slowing everything down. Now I have decided I can do the electrolyte fill but my bigger question is I how to avoid investing in a new battery in the long run? Should I be buying a single one or buy 2 smaller amperage batteries? And how should I get them connected in series or parallel, all I know is we have 1 hour power breakdowns to the tune of 6-7 everyday. So my ultimate priority is that one hour of power breakdown to go nicely but I am satisfied with the load and dont plan to increase it.

Better UPS protects battery and protects itself as well.

Company UPS protect themself a little and die slowly and damage battery as much as possible.

Your questions answer is :

Keep battery water level maintained with right and clean distilled water check water level once a week.
And better UPS makes refilling water slower. Means its a sign of safe hood healthy battery. If a battery needs water refilling every week it means UPS is overcharging it (if battery is new). Old batteries need refilling faster.

And LONG run means 1-2 years.
Only good ups gives long lasting battery health and life.

What is your load??? Is your UPS really 1000 watt or inside maybe 400-600 watt and outside body of 1000 watts???

Most probably your battery lost water, ypu didn't keep a check on it now its dead
If you don't take any precaution just takr one and keep a look at electrolyte

Assalam O Alekum my Dear Pakwheel Fellows,

I am using local made 1250 VA UPS with Phoenix UGS 175 battery. Battery was purchased last year in August. First electrolyte filled was prepared with '0' TDS water purchased from I-9 factory (i forgot the name). The battery worked good, water level was maintained as and when required (very few times; may be 1 or 2 up till now) with same '0' TDS water. Recently when i poured same water to maintain level, its back up time reduced to 50 minutes on two fans and a couple of small energy savers (as it used to be more than 2-3 hrs normally).

After usage of 1 hour with 2 fans and few lights it used to be fully charged in 1 hr 35 minutes (approx). But at present; when fully drained (alarm from UPS) it gets full charged in 1 hour only, time for full charging decreased instead of increasing...?

Battery covers and plates are 'white', no swelling, no blackish appearance from inside. What could be the possible reason and how it can be cured? Is it the gravity of electrolyte that may be decreased? if YES...what should i do, and from where to purchase gravity water?

Thanks for the reply.

At the time battery was purchased, i provided him water; he added acid and then left to cool. Once cooled down, he checked the gravity and it was poured in new battery & charged for about 2.5 hours at his shop. When i took its delivery, the guy asked me to let it be charged fully by the UPS before use, and that was done.

I will check charging voltage and gravity tomorrow, and shall update.

Nowadays there are various Battery shops in Garden & Nazimabad who offer "Battery repairing", I checked with them, they open your battery & replace the plates, then refill with fresh acid. After this they give warranty of 6 months.

For my this battery, they quoted me Rs. 6000/= for replacing my plates(as apparently my body is neat & clean)

My current battery is AGS 150 AH (23 plates).

New 150 AH battery is around 14 K -15 K

Can anybody share experience of repairing the battery(replacement of plates & acid)

-How old is the battery?
-Does your battery feel warm while ups is charging? is it bulging from centre?
-There is always some indication like an LED or LCD which shows current state of ups i.e charging/battery full/on battery etc. Without any indication it will be hard to tell when ups stops charging.

I would never go for battery repairing. If battery has gone bad, better buy new one. Phoenix UGS 175 costs 11500 in islamabad and you can trade your old battery for 2500. So in 8000 you get brand new battery, why spend 6k on repaired battery? If UPS is the culprit (over-charging/undercharging) then it will make any battery go bad within 6 months.

You can clean the terminals with old toothbrush/wire brush/sand paper or some cloth as much as possible and then apply Vaseline all around terminal and connector. Not too much just a thin layer.

Be careful while working with battery, terminals are close enough for any metal tool to touch both at once causing short circuit. Always put a piece cloth on one terminal while you are working on the other and vice versa
