Maintaining UPS/car batteries

Bro my battery is giving only 15 mins backup after refilling. The ups keeps charging all day but voltage won't go beyond 13.6v. As soon as I disconnect the ups, the battery gets down to 12.3v & start decreasing.
I checked voltage of individual cells by dipping +ve of voltmeter in each cell & connecting -ve to battery -ve. The readings were 0.4v on 2 cells, 8.x v on 2 cells & 4.x v on 2 cells. Is the procedure correct? & wat abt the readings

Did somebody tell you to test things this way, if you are following the forums, then I don’t remember that I have recommended this. You need hydrometer to check the gravity?

Anyway, problem remains that voltage never exceed 13.6 Volts whereas UPS still trying to charge the batteries , so did you verify the charging rate at this instance.

I cannot provide help if I don’t have an access to few basic variables and among them is a charging rate and AMP-HR ratings of your battery.

Brother, tell me for what reasons the battery gets hot .... not just warm, its hot .....

I had flushed and refilled with acid like few weeks back !!!!
ups is brand new appolo, i put charging rate at 20A .... but on clamp meter on almost empty battery it never exceeds 9.8 Amp.
it has option to switch to 10amp charging, on donig so, it never exceeds 6.8 am on clamp meter.
battery is 6 months old excide NS 245 ! which is approx 200 amp in actual i think !!!!!
gravity is 1280-1290 in all cells and level is ok .... but as its hot , it reduces level and i have to fill her approx 1 liter of water after 15 days !!!!
Also with charging for almost 12 hrs straight non-stop, ups didn't cuts off at 13.9 volts (as per specs of ups) battery gets very hot and volts at its terminal are 13 .... dont have voltmeter which shows in decimals, but i will check it soon and let u know here ..... still it keeps on charging which makes me worried about safety and all .....
please guide me what could be the problem ....
load is not that much , i run max 2 fans, 1 tube light and 2 energy savors on it, and it easily lasts for 3 hrs + on full charge approx.

Even with 9.8 Amperes of charging, 12 hours are far too much that UPS is not cutting off charging. Verify the charging rate at this instance(Like after 3-4 hours of continuous charging) and as you say that Voltage at battery terminal is 13.9 Volts so I think that charging rate would be very less like something 0.5 to 1 Amperes that’s why it’s still charging the batteries and if that’s the scenario then there is nothing to get worried about. If that’s not the scenario then it’s a problem with UPS, you need to remove the batteries and measure the voltage difference between Red and Black lead. As that will tell you that maximum Voltage to which UPS is suppose to charge the batteries. If that is around 13.9 Volts then it’s a problem with the UPS system.

Change the batteries of you AMP-Meter and try to measure the charging rate again. At times, you see wrong results because of bad AMP-Meter battery and choose the correct DC option to measure DC current.

Obviously if UPS is charging the batteries for around 12 continuous hours then gravity will be at its maximum value. This maximum value says that concentration of sulfuric acid in electrolyte is little high as it should be around 12.60 so try to remove some electrolyte and add distilled or de-ionized water in it in order to adjust the gravity.

Plain water is the enemy and for matter of fact distilled water is also water but is purified. If you will use anything else other then distilled water or de-ionized water then you may experience strange things like you mentioned. Never top-up the batteries with plan water.

Today i checked ... Ups steps down charging rate to 5.5 approx at 13.75 volts on terminals. But after an houre more battery volts never exceeds that voltage ... Instead just heating it more .... As i m also sure the flush performed by battery guy must be with tap water so ... Have to bear it !!!!
I will try to locate some good source for electrolyte and distilled water for future .... Any luck with metro reg pyro chemicals ????

Verify the charging rate again after 2 hours. Flush is always performed with tab water but once it comes to preparing electrolyte or topping up the batteries then that is done with distilled or de-ionized water.
Check the charging rate once it hits 13.9 Volts.

Batteries are almost one year old now.... They are AGS batteries, i wanted to flush them byt every shopkeeper said ull loose all the gravity of each cell of battery and battery life will decrease at once.... is that so....

As you said that batteries are one year old and I hope it does not have dead cells. Flush works very well for 150 AMP-HR batteries and above. Just drain the electrolyte and fill it with plain water and drain it. Repeat this process for 5-6 times and you are done.

Flush is very effective once you feel that backup time is reducing but still battery does not have any bad cell. Its most effective once you have an access to good quality electrolyte and if you are based in Lahore then get hold of pryo electrolyte before performing flush.

Do you have a clamp meter? How do you know its not cutting off? How old are ur battries? Whats their gravity? Are they heating up?

Modern day upses don't cutt off they keep charging at low amperes to keep battries fully charged. You need clamp meter to verify

Brother i dont have a clamp meter.But my battery is boiling water and giving bubbles.And the new UPS was fiitted by 6:00pm and now its 12:00am.After 3 hours the UPS reached 28.7V and another 3 hours it was also on 28.7V not going ahead and not going behind just Stuck at 28.7V and not cutting off.

Yes Batteries are getting warm not heatup,Batteries are 3months old

Previously i was using Desi UPS and i think that Desi UPS did some panga to my batteries and the gravity i think is 11.90 or 11.80 something above 11.50 .

Now please recommend me something should i get my Batteries Charged or Change the UPS.

Problem straight forward, UPS not cutting off even at 28.6 Volts. if you know how to do it then Adjust the cutoff variable to 28 Volts and if not then take it back to the person from whom you have purchased. That’s why, I said earlier that 90 % of local UPS available in market are out of adjustment and you have to get it adjusted before buying it. This is most fundamental parameter so don’t ignore it and don’t let it boil the batteries.

Kindly share the picture of your UPS, I think this also is a local UPS and people just name it whatever they like. If cutoff cannot be adjusted then UPS is faulty and get it replaced.

My problem is that .... when ever i turn on two fans they run fan...... but when the third fan is turned on......... they all become slow.... i dont know what is happening plzz help

I just called the guy from whom i bought this UPS and told what this UPS is doing.

He told me that the UPS is holding the Gravity of the Batteries to not go down.

That is why it is charging at 28.6V and not going forward nor Backward.

Is it true or he was just making fun out of me.

Your battries have gravity on the lower side, anyways.

He might be correct, If battries arent heating up then its ok. Keep caps of ur battries loose... you need to call a ups guy to confirm if it's overcharging or mot. or better purchase a clamp meter. It would be best thing to do.
Get a good quality one, 800,900 ka mil jaega... Its available in 600 too. But better buy good one.

If it's charging at just 1,2 amp then it's ok... It's just a floating charge to keep the volts up. If its charging at high amps then it's bad.

Ok Update i just took my both batteries to a battery shop and they checked its gravity.

it was 1.200 they said it is OK.Batteries are OK.

And i took the UPS to the shop where they sent me to the Electrician where he connected both batteries and he said that UPS is OK.

And now when i came home and connected UPS and now it is charging at 27.0V constant not going up nor coming down.

Also please tell me which type of clamp meter i should buy.

One which is for AC or DC.if you please tell me.

If you please also post the picture for reference how it looks.

Ok one thing more there are two type of

Amp Selector option in my UPS.

10Amp and 20amp which i should select

and There are also two modes at its back.

UPS and INVERTER

which one i should select.

Now i also checked that how much Output on batteries this inverter giving.On LCD it is showing 230V but on my Meter it is showing 178-180V fluctuating not constant.

I think tomorrow i should give this Back.And will buy homage or NS.
