Manual Transmission problem in 7th gen civic

Need experts opinion on VTI civic manual tranny. There is a knocking sound when the clutch is not pressed, one can hear it all the time irrespective of being hot or cold.

A little history:
When I bought this car some 2 years back it was difficult to shift to 2nd gear and it always shifted with a buzzing sound and there was almost no power in the 2nd gear. The gear box was opened by a mechanic but he couldn't fix it, the problem remained but in a few months it dissappeared by itself. But since then the knocking sound started. And its very difficult to put it in reverse gear.

Questions:

1. Is it time to replace the gear box?
2. Do I need to change the clutch plate as well with a tranmission replacement?
3. Can I replace the manual with an auto tranny? What parts would I need to replace with it? Infact, when I checked in Peshawar, the auto transmission costs less than the manual ones so i thought why not replace it with a prosmetic one, if it can be done without any problems

Brother if your clutch plate will worn out their will be no power. i.e you will face low pickup the car will not cross 100km/hr easily or when going on a bridge or uphill it will loose power.

Vti clutch plate / pressure plate and thrust bearing all should be changed at the same time will roughly cost u 20,000 with labour for genuine FCC one.

I think your 2nd gear shifter is worn out due to low gear oil or incorrect oil.

try this honda gear oil for 3 months and situation will improve greatly will cost u 900 rs / litre you will need 2 bottles.

If does not help try to adjust the clutch plate from any Honda 3S, its hydraulic.

Otherwise your mechanic will have to open the gearbox which you should avoid at any cost.

Civic gearbox is one of the best mine is working smooth as silk even after 195,000 KM.

Thanks bradpit. Where do I get this MTF in Isb or Peshawar? I asked for genuine honda but could only get Zic auto transmission fluid when I was changing the MTF. My gearbox was already opened thats why I'm worried. The clutch plate/disc etc are in v.good condition and the car picks up like great even on cng, I just wanted to know whether I need to change these if I have to go for transmission replacement?

I drive 70KM daily to office including a 40km motorway drive so I need my car to be in pristine running condition all the time.

Brother I do not know about Islamabad but it is available here easily and the only recommended fer oils for Honda.

If you want to get your gearbox repaired only get it done from the most reputable Honda 3S or 2S dealer in your area it will not cost you more than 10K with labour but they will do a great job.

If you want the oil I can send it to you via TCS.

If you travel that much u should get a Prosmatec instead.

One more thing also get you clutch master and slave cylinder for proper functioning.

They would look like that located right had side of the brake booster on the cars firewall.

I'll check for the oil here 1st before bothering you dear. Do you know anyone who has changed manual transmission to prosmatic one. One mechanic told me all auto tranny parts can be grabbed from Peshawar and it can be converted to prosmatic. What do you think of that?

@zeecom honda mtf is available in peshawar changed it a month ago its costs 900/bottle and 2 bottles are needed

zeecom you will have to change the ECU also if you convert it to prosmatic

Yes ECU+Speedometer+Lever+Clutch/Brake Pedals, that's a lot of changes. So anyone has a 1st hand experience of transmission conversion without any problems???

From where in Pesh? chaudhry autos? 2 bottles will be 2 liters, will it take 1.5L to change? Also which hydraulic oil is preferred? I'm using ZIC

Ensure you have correct oil level in gearbox, dont fiddle with fancy gear oils, use caltex delo silver or gold (it used to be the genuine recommendation before Honda started sticking their names on oil bottles.

ensure that you move the lever to 2nd gear with engine running, car not moving and clutch pedal all the way in. If you can then test it on the road, if it crashes or is terribly hard to get into gear then most probably the synchronizers are worn and require replacement. Keep in mind that a good manual gearbox overhaul costs about the same as an automatic gearbox overhaul of consumable parts.

nice to hear from "The Guru"; been following your posts for a while. Apologies for not really understanding your method. I checked with the engine running in all the gears, only reverse is hard to apply. But without the cultch pressed I hear a continuous knocking sound. While moving gear shifting seems fine though the rpm is high in 5th gear (3200@100km/hr 3800@120) I'd rather replace it than overhaul, a kabli gearbox from Peshawar costs 20-25K. What do you think about changing the whole system to auto?

People Usually Move From Prosmatec To Manual .....ANd Doing That Takes Efforts ......Same Is With Manaul To PROSMATEC

I checked with chaudry autos today, they only have the ATF not the MTF, they said its available on their other shop, will check next week. A friend told me not to waste money on changing the oil as your gear box is already opened once and it may not last long. Is it true that a repaired gear box has to be replaced eventually?

whats so hard in buying 2.5 litres of Caltex Delo Gold motor oil and pouring that in the gearbox. its available at all truckstands quite cheaply too.

Toyota M.T recommends 75w-80w-90 Type Gear Oils

i'm stunned to actually see this in the manual: [I]If Honda MTF is not available, you may use an SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 viscosity motor oil with the API Certification seal that says ‘‘FOR GASOLINE ENGINES’’ as a temporary replacement. However, motor oil does not contain the proper additives, and continued use can cause stiffer shifting. Replace as soon as it is convenient.
