Mechanic poured in 20w-50 (Toyota) oil in Altis SR Cruisetronic

Hi Guys,

I just bought a used Altis SR Cruisetronic. Its 55K KM driven on oddo. Recently took it for engine tuning / throttle body cleaning + oil change at Toyota Garden and the mechanic poured in Toyota Genuine 20w-50 oil without my consent (I was in the waiting lounge). Upon asking he insisted that your engine is older and this particular oil is suitable for it. (seriously disappointed with that jahil mechanic in the dealership but thats a different topic).

Now what do you guys recommend? Should I flush it and pour 5w-30 or keep it running for 3K KMs. Thanks in advance.

P.S I bought the car from a family member so there isn't any doubt in the mileage (meter reversing thing) and the engine is in excellent condition.

Let this oil run for 5k. It’s already very hot these days, so no issues with such a grade. I’ve seen XLIs run on his 20w50 for 300,000 kms without breaking a sweat.

On next oil change, change to some better grade and brand. Preferably go for Liquimoly Synthoil Hightech 5w-40.

Bro, I would suggest to drive your vehicle for 2000-2500 kms and then completely change oil along with filter.

I think, 20w-50 mineral oil ho ga, wo 5000 kms ki ma'ar mushkil hi seh pai ga.

If your engine, it's seals, etc. Are in perfect condition, then complete engine flush would prove more beneficial.

Switch to any 5w-30 oil from any well reputed brand; preferably Fully Synthetic with API rating of SN (if supported), from next oil change and continue with it.

Let the oil complete its life. U may go for flush but that will be waste of money. Change to ur wish for next time. Nothing will happen.

55k is ok for 20w50

Use the oil for 5000km, on next oil change switch to 5w-30 (recommended oil viscosity by manufacturer). People waste alot of money by under using oil and unnecessary short change intervals:

Change it! The thicker oil can clog up the valves in the engine and can cause other issues.

55,000 km isn't that much for a toyota. Your engine doesn't need 20w50 and only requires the recommended oil. 100k is when you should CONSIDER viscosity change.

Regarding the decision, as suggested by most of the respected members, I'll drive it till 2500-3000 KMs and then change it with 5w-30 API SN. Thanks and Jazzak Allah to those who took out time to reply.

Quick question, has your corolla lost any performance? Did it take longer to start up? Did the revs increase? I'm just curious

Nothing, nil, zero loss in performance so far... Starting is same as before. Revs and even fuel average is also same (around 11 in city with AC when driven with light foot (>2000 RPMs), 11.6 on info cluster). It might affect on the long run but so far nothing noticeable. Will get it replaced by 5w-30 after 2500 KMs.

@makhan01 Toyota pours 20/50 in our xli since ages - their own Toyota oil. the car is still zero meter after 110k kms on odo. bhai nothing will happen.keep driving. you will just drain your hard earned money and nothing else. complete 3000-3500 kms on this and then shift to 10/30 or 10/40.

100k is when you should CONSIDER viscosity change.

wo b agar zrurat paray to. Unless / until there is reduction in oil or performance, no need to switch from 5w-30, API SN, Fully Synthetic oil to any other grade / viscosity.

Agreed, I was speechless when the attendant / mechanic at Toyota Garden did this, he never even bother to ask me which oil I prefer. I only came to know this when I saw the remaining oil from 1liter can he put in the trunk so that it could be utilised for next oil change.
I was seriously disappointed with Toyota Garden. If the dealership has staff with the same desi mechanic mindset, then why would someone go to pay exorbitant prices? Will never go there again. Thinking of getting next service done from Toyota Walton. Please suggest if you have good experience with any other dealership. TIA

Nothing is going to happen. Use this oil for 5k kms and then pour whatever you want. There won’t be any huge difference of performance with this oil. Pour japnese toyota 5w30 oil or liqui moly next time.
