Missing on low RPM Mitsubishi Lancer engine 4G13

@xulfiqar I am facing issue of missing in low RPMs. The car is Mitsubishi lancer having original 4g13 in it. I have done following repairs / services but i guess mechanic is unable to understand the problem. The problem occurred after having a 3000km trip to Khunjrab pass.

Replaced plugs and one coil.
Throttle body serviced.
Removed CNG wiring as car was back firing on CNG

The car starts missing intermittently while running and in worst case it shows check engine light and refuse to run.After restarting the engine it works fine again.

The mechanic says that its fuel pump pressure is low as return fuel is coming very less when he removed the pipe.

Please suggest what steps i should take further.

Eyeballing is no way to work, you need to measure fuel pressure with a gauge.

It might be ignition coils

I feeling loss in power as well and missing occurs too mush when engine is cold or i start in the morning. I changed one coil with Chinese one. can any frequency miss match cause this ?

was this before or after replacing the coil?

the cng backfiring makes me think it is an ignition problem.

could be the coils or the pulse that is supposed to make the coils fire

The issues occurred after replacing coil. for approx 2000 kms it worked fine.

Then it most probably is the coils. At night time, open bonnet and stare at the coils, see if there is any arcing on any of them

Got throttle body service and fuel pump replaced. Issue resolved 80% but not 100%.

I have the same problem with my 2005 lancer 1.3. It is totally on petrol & never used on CNG. Infact the person from whom I brought it removed the cng 2-3 months after installing because of CNG loadshedding. Anyhow, in the morning whenever I start my car, the engine shows missing & it continues until the temp guage reaches half & then the missing disappears. I live in karachi & no matter what time (day or night) I start it in cold, it shows missing.

I got the coils, wires & plugs checked. 1 coil was changed which improved but the engine shows missing when its cold. Now the mechanic said that the tapets need to be adjusted. (I had a daewoo racer before & it didnt had tapets so I am amazed to know lancer has tapets). I just want to know that will mixing hi-octane resolve the missing problem? Or really there could be some other issue?

Issue resolved by changing the plugs which gone bad just in 4000 kms and changing the mechanic also. The plugs looks fine visibly but when i replaced them with 4 tip Denso matter resolved. A minute problem let me suffer for weeks and in huge costs.

Please check whether Thermostat valve is not removed. also the auto choke is working or not. A sensor attached to throttle body for auto choke is prone to become bad often in lancer.

the coils on mitsubishi are the same that you find in baleno and liana with a different boot and connector.

almost all issues I saw were due to arching of the spark or using wrong spark plugs in it or with plugs wrongly gapped, a coat of silicone grease should be used when pushing the coils on the plugs and the tail wire on the other plug.

It is also vital to make sure that there is absolutely no whitish/gray tracking on the coil leg or connector. This is evidence that the coil is leaking.

The only test that can show you a coil's internal health is a scope and amp clamp because the coil's ignitor is inside. The coil is measured for amp pull - and the timing signal from the ECU is also plotted - its a very good tool to see if the coil is good or bad.

Ghusl-e-mayyat of throttle baady, eyeballing the fuel pressure, shooting parts at the car is purely a waste of time, money and energy. Better to find someone who has all such tools and pay him/her for the service.

he is very experienced guy and only because of him i am satisfactorily driving 25 years old Lancer and enjoying the ride.
Meet him and INSHALLAH he will solve this issue.

Can he detect problems for the newer lancers?

i have lancer 2006 1.3 , the problem is wired, when i used on cng no problem at all, while when i use on petrol, i feel under power on first gear after 3-4 second drive smooth, having missing on each gear.

I have the same car, 1.3 2006 manual, only driven on petrol. I also have a similar problem. Based on my experience, I can share some symptoms,

On petrol you might be experiencing missing between 1500-2500 rpm & then the missing clears & the car drives normal, right?

You may get your spark plug rubber boots checked for any current leakage. they wear out with time & need to be replaced or you can get them properly taped to reduce leakage. Also check your current coils if they are producing weak spark.

Your O2 sensor which is located below the car is connected in the exhaust pipe. It must be weak which is giving your engine a high air-fuel mixture signal which makes that car feel under powered when you are accelerating between 1500-2500 rpm. High fuel mixture means more fuel & less air.

Fuel pump could be chocked as its filter gets dirty with time due to impurities in the fuel. Cleaning that can also improve results.

My car had missing & I had to get 1 coil replaced & all the rubber boots properly taped. My O2 sensor seems to be weak as I am not getting a good mileage. It is 7.5 km per liter with AC. On highway it is 11-11.5 km per liter.

My car also seems a bit under powered between 1500-2000 rpm but once it crosses 2500 rpm, the power keeps geting crazy. I took my car up to Gorakh Hill station & it managed to climb steep hills where only 4x4 can go.

BTW, the 1.3 variant is a bit under powered at lower rpm but runs good at higher rpm.

Tips :

• Check plugs, coils & boots.
• Service throttle body, MAP sensor & IAC stepper motor.
• Try to service the O2 sensor as well as it is a little difficult to get it removed for servicing.
• Check head tapet gaps.
