Gentelmans,,, iam in need of a Advise. I actually wanted to SWAP the diffrentials of my MUTT jeep... From rear to Front, since my rear diffrential is a little bit noisy, but my front diffrential in quiet in a well maintained condition. and is very smooth while in operation... SO i BELIEve the MAIN FITTING are Almost the SAMe of both the Diffrentials either Rear or Front,, IF i SWAP my diffrential and install the front one at the back and the rear one at front... WHAT WILL BE THE outcome??? is THERE ANY SUCH DIFFRENCE IN SPEED AND THE RATIO OF THE FRONT AND REAR DIFFRENTIAL??? thats the point iam COnfused... (like in potohars and further SJ410 and toyota FJ series we have HIGH Low speed 4x4) so IS IT TRUE IN THE CASE of M151 A2 that, THE FRONT DIFFRENTIAL is of LOW SPEED and the rear one is HIGH speed? or either both are havign the SAME SPEED AND TORQU RATIO???

AOA Capt Sb, long time no hear......

As for your diffs, close your eyes and swap the two.
There's no difference in ratios, it was made to be like that, that is why it has a tranfer gear bearing IN and OUT, no high / low ranges to deal with.

Expect a little noise when you switch the front to the rear. It is actually not that of the diff, but the rotating motion of the shaft and the flat floor above create a bit of a humming vibration.

Okay i got your point that its possible that we can swap the 2 diffrentials from rear to front... and it has the same combination of Speed N Torque Ratio... But i didnt click your point as you said there will a humming Noise due to the flat floor... CAn you please just clear it, regarding what noise you are quiting and whats the main reason behind... i didnt intercepted this point.. so i need soem firther details regarding this issue... i will aprpreciate your feedback....

well if i change the diffrentials then since there in NO such diffrence of Ratio and Speed... so what about... Advantages and the MAin DISadvantages i mean Counsequences,,, of this ALTRATION..... refer to thet HUMMING noise you have quoted

@ Sarmad,, Sir i guess i will appreciate if you Kindly put some more light to the diffrential Swap issue...

i really understood that technically it is possible that we can swap the diffs. since there is No such diffrence of Speed Ratio and Basic Fitting, But iam confused at a point since you said IF U SWAP THE DIFF FROM FRONT TO REAR, there will be some noise like Humming sound (DUE TO THE ROTATION shaft and the flat floor ABOVE it) BUt its natural... this case will even be Same in the actual rear diffrential, (again due to the moving shaft and flat floor) but since both rear and front diffrentils LOOK alike as SAME in physical aspects and FITTING, So (front diffrentil ko rear mein fit KArney Se hi Woh expected sound kyun??? ager reason rotation of shaft and floor ka hai then it will be same in ager rear diffrential laga rahe, because fittign to ek hi jaisey hai...

But infact i guess there is a remady for it,,, if we may install the Rubber bushes in between then bolts of the diffs... so that there will be no direct contact with the body and diffs. and sound or expected viberation will be abit lesser... What do you... kindly put some more light regarding this point of diffrential Shuffle / swap... CASe THANKS in advance

MY Ride... just thought to share with you guys... Kindly feel free to share your view, regarding my vehicle... Well, i have installed a Toyota Hilux Diesel Engine, To that we Mostly call 2L (2200) cc. (Using Electrical TURBO on it) in addition to a Hilux SSR AIR Cleaner Altered.
with original Gear Box with 4x4 fully equipped and in best operational condition...

Brand New meter panel installed, with R.P.M. as well as some further advance guages like e.g.t. (exhaust gas Temperature) oil pressure, oil Temperatur, Atmospheric temperature (Berometer)... Humvee Touch switches.
NIssan Sunny (Sedan) Sterring coloum modified N Installed on the original Steering Box (without any cutting or welding on its sterring ROD) its just some thing like Coupeling to Coupeling (as per Safety Standereds) MErcedes benz, Air Compressor System Installed in the Tool Box compartment... to provide in hand Airpressure to FIll up the Tires any time any where. Electrical Turbo System Installed with the Engine...

Ultimately. BRAND NEw Schock Observer are installed, (Rear and Front) with New Bushes. THIS VEHICLE is actually Modified, (but with originality) while keeping in view the inspiration of CJ series specially WRANGLER...

Capt Sb, mashAllah, you have done quite a bit of modifications and I must say a great deal of paint job involved in it too.

Apart from the Merc emblem, rest looks fine.

As for your understanding on a the humming.
Sir, the diffs fit on to the mount/body without any type of spacer/bushes so its a metal to metal contact. Once one part of the metal starts moving (the diff) the motion create a noise which is then transfered to all contected areas.
The floor under the rear seat is just over the diff and the movement that the diff makes, in turn makes a noise, which in turn is amplified by the sheet metal plate acting as the amplifier (the floor)

What you can do is, put in thin rubber bushes between the diff and the mount to 'minimize' the sound created by vibration.

It has been a longtime since we heard from you ..... so the MUTTs don't interest you anymore, but the Merc emblem did hun :S .... maybe I'll buy a G55 after selling my MUTT.

As for the sale of it, well I have been pretty sick lately, with a cronic back problem and my doctor's ordered me not to ride the MUTT offroad. So i'm thinking of selling the MUTT.
My Civic's too low too for my back, so I need a 3 door Pajero/Prado/LC70 which gives a comfy ride and with time I can start taking it offroad

I am sorry to know that u r selling ur MUTT. U r the most knowledgeable person in the subject of MUTTology and provide lot of help to ppl throughout Pakistan. As far as ur backache is concerned, I am ready 2 treat u. :)
As u know that I am not a MUTT owner but its fan. Frankly speaking, I feel that I wont b able 2 manage keeping a MUTT bc of my profession. I ve read an advice by u 2 a beginner 2 go 4 a Suzuki jeep. It disappointed me a lot.
Actually, I ve a query. Recently, somebody told that some excellent condition MUTTs were available for sale in Karachi which were basically under use of UN in Afghanistan. These were white in colour. Do u have any idea?? 1 of my friends is interested.

@Sam - FJ40 is gone as my brother couldnt restore it due to his time limitations - he was just motivated by my mutt otherwise he is actually a software engineer, and they guys dont have that patience to visit workshops that much

I've let the mutt go to Ali Zafar (a.k.a charged) of IJC. Amount was no good but i am happy that it has gone to a real enthusiast, who'll take care of her. Have let it go in 350k - registration responsibility was mine and i have paid 55k for its registration from lahore.

I've now bought BJ61 with 13BT - the LC is in great condition all original and actually belongs to Sardar Zulfiqar Khan Khosa. See the pics
