Need advice regarding oil change of a Toyota Vitz 2012 in Peshawar

Sorry about that. It was late at night and I was at somebody else's. I linked those images because they seemed awfully similar to mine compared to online images of 2NZ-FE / 2SZ-FE engines.

Yes that looks like a 1NR but without the plastic head cover.

Considering I know next to nothing about cars, can I do this on my own without messing it up or creating another problem? I want to do it because I want to learn doing basic maintenance on my own, but I'm just being cautious here is all.

Also, I was told somewhere else to park my car and press down on the pedal a bit to see if I'm burning oil by checking smoke color from its exhaust pipe. I'll do that as well now.

Sorry for the late reply but something came up and I haven't been able to check the PCV valve. Plus I don't have any brake cleaner (as used by the person in the tutorial to clean the oil from it).

I was able to check my exhaust smoke and there's nothing there. No bluish smoke or any color smoke for that matter. Just hot air being blown out with the usual smell and a couple of water droplets with a black inky hue. Here's a screenshot from a 30 second video I made of it (I was revving the engine for like 2 minutes)

Guess I'll check my coolant as well.

P.S:

My fuel average is down to 8.4 KM/L from 12 (or more) when I got this car with 90% engine oil level and being driven on regular city roads with the AC on (during Ramadan in April). It was like that till late July when I noticed the average going down so I reset it but it's still around 8. something KM/L.

Apart from checking if the valve is blocked / clogged etc, is there anything else to look out for? I'll look it up online for more info as soon as possible.

You can check it by shaking it and hear for rattling. If you hear rattling it's fine, just clean it with carb cleaner, let it give a few minutes for it to dry and then place it back. If you don't hear a rattle, buy new.

Carb cleaner has oily material, so it's preferable to use engine degreaser to clean PCV valve. Spray degreaser inside and outside the PCV valve spray generously, wipe it with a soft cloth and let it dry for a few minutes.

Ok, so I've checked the PCV valve and it does rattle / make noise. I was able to blow air through it from both sides.

While going through the user manual, I came across this,

When oil level on the dipstick goes from full to low, you've lost about 1.5 L. I assumed you'd lose 3 L.

If that's the case then I've lost about 750 ml after 1550 KM of driving in the city. 1550 because I looked through my old screenshots and I was wrong about the 1100 KM figure.

From the next page in the manual:

Engine oil consumption

• The amount of engine oil consumed depends on the oil viscosity, the quality of the oil and the way the vehicle is driven.
• More oil is consumed under driving conditions such as high speeds and frequent acceleration and deceleration.
• A new engine consumes more oil.
• When judging the amount of oil consumption, keep in mind that the oil may have become diluted, making it difficult to judge the true level accurately.
• Oil consumption: Max. 1.0 L/1000 km (1.1 qt./600 miles, 0.9 Imp. qt./600 miles)
• When driving at high engine speeds or with a heavy load, when towing, or when driving while accelerating or decelerating frequently.
• When leaving the engine idling for a long time, or when driving frequently through heavy traffic.
• If your vehicle consumes more than 1.0 L (1.1 qt., 0.9 Imp. qt.) every 1000 km (600 miles), contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and equipped professional.

and you've said

So idk, I'm lower than the max consumption of 1 L/1000 KM but still way above your range. Maybe Vitz engines (1NR-FE) are like that in normal usage?

Though I don't know why my fuel average has gone down. I'll try driving for longer and see what's what.

I will however go for a complete oil change since I've asked the owner and he has zero idea about what grade of oil he was using. And because of that, I can't do a top up of my current oil without mixing grades (and brands) most probably.

I guess I'll ask one more time, 5W-30 or 10W-40? I was thinking of going with 5W-30 (according to the manual) and if I notice something weird / way higher oil consumption, then I'll switch over to 10W-40.

how about compression test before next oil change as correctly suggested by @dayrider.

when you are ready for oil change, change oil filter as well. use 5W-30 of known brand as in Shell, Havoline, PSO, etc only.

Dont worry about mix up. Just do the top up. I have been mixing different oils ie i top up with any available oil. I was in your position but then i searched alot on bob the oil guy website and found it to be ok and then I tried it and no issues what so ever however I would advise you to do an oil change with new oil filter. You should have done it anyways even if there was no problem because we never know how truthful the ex owner was.
Other than oil also change the transmission fluid, air filter, cabin filter, refresh the brake fluid, brake service, change brake pads if they are done, check if car is on water or coolant, flush it with new coolant. After doing all this take the car for a spin on long route (google Italian tuneup) and when you come back then report back how the car is behaving.
