How about SONY Alpha as i read something very good about them and also they are cheap as compared to Nikon and Canon as on dpreview they have score even better then many of them. especially i got S77 and A580 as our Nikon also hold the SONY Sensor. Whats the main limitation or big No in them.
SONY SLT-A77 sports a 24.3-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor, a 3-way tilt 3.0-inch LCD screen, an OLED electronic viewfinder, an upgraded BIONZ image processor, Sony’s 2nd generation Translucent Mirror Technology system, 3D Sweep Panorama mode, a built-in GPS, an HDMI port and 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities. The Sony Alpha SLT-A77 is priced at $1,399.9
While on bit lower side SONY Alpha DSLR-A580 is also a great thing to have
For portraits Prime is best but for normal mixed bag of Photography your need some thing 18-200 or till your pocket can allow. Like if you are in Zoo and wants to take a pic of Lion/Bear you cannot walk to him rather need Zoom to take the picture so here the Prime can be big no until you need to crop it. Prime is good in Image Quality but many conditions do fails them but should also be part of Gear
