Nop brother I'm not asking about interval
Asking at what mileage should I shift to 5w30
As recommended grade is 0w20, it's preferable, also using that
Query is, how long should I stick to it? 1-1.5-2 lac kms? Or when oil pressure drops then?

There is no need to change viscosity upon a certain mileage or age. That's just a myth.

If your engine doesnt burn oil dont shift thicker oil

If the engine is burning oil, the solution is not thicker oil. The proper solution is to fix the problem causing the oil to burn in the first place.

Just wanted to know what is science behind changing oil grade, or if it was necessary then at what mileage ..

So your engine recommendes 0w20 or 5w30 . I believe they recommended the 20 for cold temperatures as cold as -30 to -40 when the cold even affects operating temperatures. If 5w30 is recommended for summer you should use 0w30. But ur just wasting money on 0w’s because the climate is moderate and 5w oils wont make a significant difference in cold starts vs 0w oils unless ur daily trips are less than a 1 km such as only driving in gated society area or streets or you drive a hybrid car ( not those eco idleones ).But when comparing 5w’s with 10w’s , 10w’s can take quite long to reach operating temperatures.
Just for a guess ( not confirmed just guess theory)
Lets say 0w’s take 10 seconds to reach operating temperatures 5w’s take 15 seconds and 10w’s take 45 seconds.

Well this topic got off topic . It is supposed to be about oil change intervals but talking about oil viscosity is also great as this is also a common problem here. So guys why do mechanics after engine haul recommend the thickest oil in the market
Is your engine clocking over 100,000kms?
Is your engine burning oil ?
Is your engine leaking oil?
Have you overhauled your engine?
Do you hate your car so much that you want the ustaad to ruin it?
Is your ustaad “TERI GARI MERI MARZI” ?
Then use THE OIL, KINGS OF OIL, PAKISTAN’S BEST SELLER, THE ONE AND ONLY
All mighty 20w50 from ZAIC or HAVALEIENE or TO(Y)TA TALGON JENIYAN AIL
So how did it probably start ? Did lube shops try to sell remaining stocks of thicker oils because they were less in demand but then the demand increased and we still have them just like 20 years ago. These heavy weight oils are still used in trucks or motorcycles though.

my car manual recommends 0w20 but then ppl say this recommendation is for japan and that Pakistan has hot climate.
