Oxygen Sensor Suzuki Swift

Assalam-O-Alaikum,

I have bought a Japanese swift, 2007 model 2014 registered, absolutely beautiful car, also runs perfectly, I had it checked by carsure before buying, they did a diagnostic test and it revealed that there was an oxygen sensor malfunction. At the time I didn't pay much heed to it, as the car worked perfectly, but the check engine light was on, I read on the internet that usually it's dust or debris that makes the Oxygen sensor malfunction as these things don't go bad so easily, especially in japanese cars, can anyone please tell me where it's located on the swift so I can remove it and put it through the cleaning process?

well you cannot clean O2 Sensor, you have to replace it

and by the law you cannot bypass O2 sensor. it is against environment

Brother I would strongly STRONGLY and REALLY VERY VERY STRONGLY suggest you not to go for a new oxygen sensor straight away. Here is my reason.

Not a week has passed and I have faced the exact same problem you were facing. The engine light would come on and the o2 sensor error would come when the guys at suzuki would check via their scanners.
Now the error which I faced had the code P0031 and that error means there are 4 basic problems with your oxygen sensor.

1.A short or open in the heater circuit in the sensor
2. A failed O2 sensor heater
3. Wiring/connectors broken/frayed leading to sensor and/or relay
4.Failed PCM/ECM

First you need to make sure what the problem with your o2 sensor really is before going ahead and buying a new one. If you buy from Suzuki they will charge you 21660 Rs for a shitty almost used oxygen sensor and if you buy online you get a brand new one for around 7 and a half thousand.

After I ordered my o2 sensor and paid in full to Suzuki they made me wait for a month and then told me that it will take another week. I was furious and took my money back and ordered online by the help of a fellow pakwheeler and that piece was delivered to me in only 5 ish days.

Now the worst part of the story is that when I replaced my o2 sensor with the new one the check engine light still came back on and it showed the same error P0031. I was really lost. After spending another two days at the Suzuki Cantt Workshop we were able to find out that the current from the car chor switch in its security alarm was the real reason that the engine light came on and gave the error.

Once I switched it off the light is gone and no error comes up anymore.

My sincere advice to you is that first you absolutely must make sure that what is causing the error.
Oxygen sensors are built to last and chances are you have a current issue at worst.

Don't waste your hard earned money on getting a new o2 sensor only to find out that there was something else wrong the whole time like I did.

Find out what error comes up and if it is the same one P0031 then get your electrical wiring checked. A good electrician will be able to find out the real problem. I would suggest you visit Suzuki Cantt Motors if you reside in Lahore and have their guys take a look at your car.

Well, thank you for your response, and no by remove I meant to take it out, and put it through the cleaning process of the O2 sensor, which is pretty common as these sensors are fine but just get coated with carbon and gunk from the exhausts. Not to bypass it I would never do that, I'm an all by the book kinda guy.

Thanks man, but nope, no chor switch or anything at all of that sort in this car, I don't remember the exact code, but I remember it said Oxygen Sensor Malfunction, and I reasearched it quite a bit, to find out that all you need to do is take it out, clean it, put it back in and voila! I'm sort of a car-tech kinda guy, so I like fixing issues as such myself as they don't seem to make much sense to local mechanics and the ones who it makes sense to charge a lot of money Anyways, since you know about the sensors, can you tell me where they are located in the swift? I would love to track them down along the exhaust pipe, but don't have car lift yet ._. or even a car jack at the moment xD

The first one is located on top of the exhaust manifold and the second is in front of the catalytic converter. I'm trying to attach a pic but this stupid app isn't letting me.
This being said it's still strongly recommended not to touch the O2 Sensors at all because even some contact with air may cause them to malfunction completely. I urge you to reconsider and find out the error code first before starting any kind of handy work on your car.

If you can see the grey wire leading down next to the "Don't Touch" symbol. The silver shiny bit at the end of the wire is the oxygen sensor 1. The other end of the wire attaches to the connector that goes to the ECU of the car.

Thank you so much, I looked around myself last night and found them pretty quickly, surprised that no one on the internet mentioned where they were, and now that query has been solved too xD I'm sorry bro but I guess you've been misinformed about that, oxygen sensors are just like any other sensor, they get covered in soot and carbon overtime, you have to take them out and put them through a specific cleaning process, which just means you put them in along with their connectors in petrol overnight or for sometime, I'll share the link of how to service an O2 sensor here, O2 sensors don't go bad, as much as I've researched, it's actually quite impossible, they just get clogged with carbon, depending on the quality of the fuel used. The only time you should replace one is if it breaks or short circuits. They are an extra set of sensors which just help your car give better economy and performance, you can even run your car without them Don't do that though as it may choke the catalytic converter overtime and give incredibly awful fuel economy, anyways. I don't have the tools as of yet, will share the results, when I start and end this little endeavour.

Okay, so the car is giving 8-9km/l which isn't good at all since it's a Japanese swift with K12B Dualjet engine, will have to do the oxygen sensor cleansing soon.

Update : So, I haven't opened up the oxygen sensor yet, but I got all the fluids refreshed and maintenance done. Oil change, transmission fluid change, oil filter replaced, air filter replaced and I got a fuel injector cleaner added to the petrol tank. Other than that, I bought a catalytic converter cleaner and used it according to its instructions, the check engine light hasn't gone, even after resetting the ecu, but the fuel economy has gone way up, I'm still running on that same tank I got filled 3 days ago, and it's not even half yet. But the CEL bothers me, I tried to remove the O2 sensors but they're situated in such a way that I can't get to them without the proper tools. Will have to go to a mechanic to get them opened, will do the cleaning process myself.

Update: I went to AT/Autos near Nipa, in the alley where Mr.Burger used to be. There's an automotive engineer named Tariq, I went to him with some reference so he checked out my primary O2 (The one situated on top and is visible when you open the bonnet) and the secondary (The one situated after the Catalytic converter). He said that my primary O2 is perfectly fine, if there is a problem it would be with my secondary, but when he unplugged and re-plugged the grips and connections the CEL vanished, to which he said to drive the car around and if the CEL comes on again, I should contact him. I hope it doesn't turn on again, because if it does I'll have to get it replaced, and the secondary O2 of the JDM Swift that I have is not available, as it's a 6 pin connecter he said and will have to be sourced with some difficulty and plenty time, also, a lot of money.

they go bonkers after around 1,20,000Km and is a replacement part, nothing in car has a life time service interval. Please research more

Yes I understand, but the odo reading on the car is 56k. Considering it's a JDM I bet the meter has been reversed. I'll personally check the post-cat O2 to see what's so special about it and how it can't be sourced easily, in the mean time if the CEL comes on I'll do the cleaning process, might add some 10-20k to the sensor if not restore it completely.

Update: The CEL came on, as I expected. So, cleaning isn't gonna fix anything, even if it does it'll just prolong the inevitable. So I didn't attempt to clean anything, too much work for not much of a result, and it all depends on chance that cleaning it 'might' work. So, I ordered both sensors brand new to fix the problem completely. It was quite difficult to get the OEM numbers of the sensors, after rigorously wiping them with a wet cloth and inserting my phone in tight spots so the camera could read the code, I managed it. If anyone wants to replace a sensor, know that they are like puzzle pieces, you can't fit something that doesn't belong, so get the exact OEM number and get that exact sensor, no 'jugar' no tinkering. Nah, rather not search a junkyard, too much effort plus the part found wouldn't be worthwhile. I ordered brand new sensors for less than 5k, what's the harm.

One more thing, turns out the primary O2 sensor is the 6pin one and the 4pin one is the secondary, Tariq bhai couldn't see which was connected where in the dark, I talked to him later and told him, so he said I should get them changed since now it's the primary one that's faulty.

Just saying cuz another person here on PW ordered an o2 sensor for pkdm swift and found his issue unresolved after spending thousands on a brand new part.
