I'm sorry, but the naiveté on this page is way off the charts. The cryptovariable keys are not made in the heavens and beamed down to the blue planet, but mere mortals like you and me come up with cryptographic algorithms. There are so much more effective ways to ensure that warplanes etc are not used against the mothership than having the operating country to beg for boot-up password every 24 hours.

The codes don't really matter. We developed a workaround in the 80s, we'll do so again. Anyway, they aren't changed frequently, only due to upgrades...so i think we're good.

No offense, but this is one of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories I have ever come across. Do you honestly believe that so many countries would dole out hundreds of billions of dollars for over-priced military equipment if there was even the most remote possibility of something like this happening?

What our defense equipment supplier(s) (US in this case) can do, however, is to cut off supplies of updated/less buggy/more advanced software for the on-board computer systems, refuse sale of spare parts, refuse complex repairs, among other things. But the notion of having a grandiose plan to disable fighter jets just with a flick of a switch is nothing more than a conspiracy theory.

Public money of a poverty-stricken country is not a wise idea to purchase these "Shiny vipers requesting permission to activate their fangs at the time of need".

LOL! At first there were no codes. Then there were codes that did not prevent the planes from flying sorties. Then there were codes that we can work around, so they are not important. Then there were codes that do not change daily, even though they are called daily codes that expire at 2400 GMT every day.

I could go on in much greater and specific detail, but let me just sit back, and enjoy slowly sipping my nice drink in hand. After all, it is no skin off my knuckles.

The codes do matter. A lot has changed over 30 years and developing a workaround is next to impossible. The codes can and are changed in ways you cannot even imagine, and effect operation in ways that are significant.

Finally, if you think "we're good" who am I to challenge that delusion? Please carry on dreaming!

if we think without emotions from the providers point of view, than this is a logical thing to do.

next day by day as the technology improves/advances more and more things are down in software, and take my word for it if anyone wants to put a backdoor or some "software" lock in a complex machine like the one discussed that its next to impossible to go pass it.

hardware is easy to copy/replicate, hell i think one will be able to copy an entire f-16 before has enough capability to replicate its OS.

last but not the least, beggars cant be choosers, we sustain on foreign aid so what can we expect?

who gives a hoot if these birds are able to deliver our nukes successfully or can be used against our conventional rival in case of an adversary. US has already cautioned Pak not to use these F-16 against India and it is safe to say that they must have ensured it by implanting a small piece of code to render it useless. They can trigger it any time, they feel it 's being misused.

Anyways, in my leap of wild imagination soon in the near future these birds are going to be obsolete as next arena of warfare belongs to Biological and Technological Weapons of MD - Angry Viruses and technologies like HARP would be much effective to clean sweep your enemy without alerting them. That can happen even in the form of covert operations. Nobody would even know, who did it. that's the best part;)

I am hopeful on the biological front if that happens we already have the best carriers and delivery mechanism in the form of suicide bombers:)
