The codes do matter. A lot has changed over 30 years and developing a workaround is next to impossible. The codes can and are changed in ways you cannot even imagine, and effect operation in ways that are significant.

All versions of the F-16 are pretty good dogfighters for sure. However, in this era of BVR engagements, this advantage is rapidly diminishing.
