your engine is running too cold, replace the thermostat with a new one, the temperature should never drop below 80C in any condition specially when driving the car.

The black smoke can be a bunch of items, this engine will smoke black for a bit on startup - like a small puff - while accelerating at full power you should not see any smoke at all unless someone took out the trap oxidiser from the exhaust. The intake manifold, charge cooler, EGR and flapper valves in the intake should be cleaned and lubed up too.

Also make sure the MAF is a genuine MB part - if someone stuck a chinese part in there or a cheap VW part - it makes the engine start and work but the engine smokes.

Start from correcting the thermostat valve and using genuine MB coolant or any DIESEL rated coolant like CAT LLC or Shell LLC. Dont use any other coolant in this car. btw - who put those large rims in there, they are not suited for this car. They even lug down an E320 (maybe I like my cars to accelerate like a bat from hell)

Use a low saps oil in this engine, namely any API CJ4 rated oil with a higher VI, make sure the engine gets real hot and toasty before you ramp on the accelerator pedal. btw this little maasoom 2.2 litre engine pushes enough torque to burn out its rear tires at the drop of a hat.

I have this same facelift model but the US models also got the nice chrome trims on the bump strips around the car and also LED indicator door mirrors.

I drive it everyday to and from work and go about doing goofy stuff with it, like pulling something

@xulfiqar bhai, this highlighted pipe is leaking oil from the collar and the oil was all over the wiper washer bottle..

that hose ideally, shouldn't be leaking any oil.
as xulfiqar already said, start with replacement of the thermostat valve

ref the hose, what you can for now is open the end shown in the picture, take a good picture of whatever is inside the "pipe" and show us here. Plus change it, it shouldn't be leaking.

is that a jubilee type clamp on that pipe?

the original benz clamp is quite different and extremely strong, This place also has a sort of O ring to help seal the charge pipe.

But if you are seeing that much of oil then your intercooler must be a pond of oil, remove and clean it. Check the blowby and see if you can find oil in there, If you do - stop driving the car and first get the temperature problem resolved and use a proper low ash diesel rated oil in it. Dont worry about synthetic for the time being. Get it clean and proper.

@xulfiqar - my 617 also tends to be running at 70-75 degrees on long open road spells, hits an 80 in slower city traffic conditions. something wrong here?
no issues with the thermostat valve as its brand new - tested the valve prior to installation using a beaker with hot water and a thermometer; opens up when it should.

Yes bhai i will get it done on saturday. Btw how should i check for blow by?? When start, with dipstick out, no blow.. But when i open the oil cap then tiny drops of oil cone out plus light white kind of smoke.

@Kiki091 the easiest that i know off to check blow by is too unscrew the oil cap at operating temperature of the engine. with the motor on your cap should not fly off like a cork on a champagne bottle it should rather just jiggle on there.

the proper way, as per my knowledge, is to get a compression test done using the right tool; which shahnawaz does have.

i might be wrong here hence would be looking forward to xulfiqar's take on this.

What temperature rating was installed? the 61x engines had about 5 different thermostat temperatures. The coldest being 63C, the hottest one being 90C. The factory one for asian tropical export was 80C.

The engine temperatures cannot ever fall below the thermostat temperature rating. If it is then that temperature is where the thermostat is regulating.

BMW similarly had a variety of thermostats for their engines and many are interchangeable.

Yep, Mr Baig is correct, check blow at normal temperature only, a slight amount of air (even a wisp of smoke) is ok, the oil drops are from the timing chain.

If your oil cap blows off and the fill port looks like Pakistan railways loco trying to get to Jehlum - you have a problem.

well my cap jiggles around here and there but I checked it at cold temperature, rest can u elaborate the last phrase u used @xulfiqar bhai.. mjhe samjh nai ayi ye locomotive waali baat..

This is a terrible picture but will serve its purpose, I dont fidget with my phone whilst driving - so technically I violated my own rules.

You can notice the temperature needle, it stays there even in 51F driving down the highway at slow speed or high speed. The thermostat does this, Anything below this temperature and the ECU falls back to warm up mode (aka open loop aka petrol addict)

If It smokes like a PR tired dead loco from the oil cap your engine has major problems.

btw if your engine runs cold the ME (diesel CU) module will increase fuel to add heat to the engine - increased fuel = visible black smoke from the tail pipe, dont be surprised when the rear of the car gets a black soot coating when driven daily and not washed for a month, Its a badge of honour of using a diesel engine.

In proper tune this car spews very burnt smelling exhaust like a volvo HD truck
